Practicum Reflection-Guided Reading Lesson

Name of Book: The Shepherd and the Fairy

Level: N

1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related
to the area of focus were included in the lesson today?
The focus of todays lesson was finding the main idea and comprehension.
The activities that we did that related to the focus area was review what we
read last week and discuss certain parts of the story. We also wrote down on
a piece of paper what we thought the main idea was and why we thought it
was that.

2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn?
One thing that went really well with the lesson was the students
remembering about what we read last week and telling it to a classmate that
was gone last week. The students learned that when you comprehend what
you are reading, it makes it a lot easier to answer questions about it and to
find the main point of the story.

3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or

confirmed something from today dealing with student achievement in the
area of reading. (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary,
comprehension, before/during/after reading.
Before reading today I was unsure if the students would remember what we
had read last week. I was afraid that they did not comprehend the story very
well. That quickly changed as I was reading because they were saying whose
predictions were right and whose were not. After reading I realized that the
students were comprehending what we had read and that they understood
what the main idea was. I was also able to see if they would define words like
main idea and point of view.

4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it!

kind of moment. How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience?
Explain the situation.

One moment was when a student was doing independent work and could not
answer the question because she was unsure of what the word meant. I gave
her some alternative words that would help her to figure out the word. As
soon as I did that she was quickly able to answer the question and she felt
accomplished because she knew a new word.
