1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
Fantasy: you can save everyones life and everyone is happy and nothing bad happens
Reality: it is a lot of work, people die, outcomes can be badnot a lot of rewards, but defiantly worth the
workI am a nurse because I love what I do, I do not do it for the recognition that I get from the job.
2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
(educational level and requirements)

Associate Degree in Nursing. Need to do 20 continuing education hours every two years. Renew nursing
license every two years. Other education and training depends on where you work and what the institution
requires of you
3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
I worked in an intensive care unit. We work 12 hour shifts (if we are lucky and not much it going on we will leave
after 12 hours). I preferred to work at night as I am independent and can take care of the patients without much
intervention from others. I loved ICU. I would not like to work anywhere else for extended periods of time. ICU
is challenging and unpredictable. Currently I work PRN (whenever necessary) for a plastic surgeon either in his
office seeing patients or in the operating room assisting with surgeries. When we have surgeries, we are scrubbed
in and on our feet all day. It can get a little boring and tedious in the OR, which some people like, but I prefer the

excitement of the ICU. My days are shorted at the Plastic surgeons and I can pick and choose when I want to
work, so that works out well for me and my busy schedule.

4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?
(job security)
I am very secure in my position. Nursing and health care in general, is a constantly growing field that will
always need workers. I see this industry, at least in Houston, growing tremendously in the future.

5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?
(salary)
I make $32 an hour, currently. The salary varies depending on where you work. You could call me an
independent contractor and because I only work PRN, I can ask for a higher pay as I get accommodated for my
flexibility.

6. What potential for growth is there in your field?

(growth potential)
In the next few years, it is predicted by the state of Texas that 1900 health care workers will be needed in the
Clear lake/Friendswood area as determined by the growth of the surrounding communities. Health care is always
something that people need, so we will never run out of clients.

7. Would the location of the hospital affect your job security?

Yes, the location of a hospital can affect my job security. If there is a lot of competition around, we may not get
the volume of patients that we need to keep the hospital open. On the other hand, rural hospitals can also close
based on location and lack of use. Typically, however, health care is a stable and growing field that will provide
job security no matter where you are as there will always be sick people around us and someone will always need
care. You may have to travel some for jobs, but there are jobs to be found.

8. About how many hours, would you say, go into your typical work week? (on the clock and working
from home: if applicable)

Revised Fall 2013

Usually, when I worked full time in the ICU- we would work 4 -12 hour shifts on week and 3 12-hour shifts the
next weekto make 80 hours in two weeks. There are always extra shifts to be had, but it is also nice for
vacations as you can schedule your time off around a block of days off. Currently, I can pick and choose the days
I want to work. IF I have something going on, I just do not schedule myself to work that day. Nursing has great
flexibility and can fit into any type of situation you might find yourself in. IF you are single- you can travel all
over the world and get paid for it. If you have a family you can stay put and make a decent income. You can
always find extra work, if you want.

9. What benefits does the hospital you work at provide that made you choose to work there?
Health care is paid for
Holidays/ vacation days are paid for (if you take the time they give you, of course if you take extra, you are
on your own)
You get sick days and maternity leave if you need it

10. Are you staying where you are or are you going to try to advance in your field (if applicable)?
I will be staying where I am in my field. I have been a nurse for 25 years. Nowadays, however, especially
hospitals, they are requiring new grads to have their BSN degree. If I had to, I would go back to school and get
what is required of me to continue to work, but as of today, I can do whatever I need to do with the current degree
that I have and I have no plans on changing that.
