The UST NSTP IBANG KLASE seminar helped you get acquainted with different kinds of

services that one can do for the community.

Your understanding of the issues and realities happening in our society is very important.
Your knowledge should not be limited to what you see in the social media or read through
books and news literature. We belong in the society this is our community. As get older
our community expands and gets bigger, from your household to the university-wide
community and the different areas that we move in. As a member, we have observed
different realities, issues and concerns that have affected not only us, individually, but the
entire community.
The activities in this toolkit and the lesson you have learned from Chapter 5 and 6 will help
you to have a deep understanding of these realities. This toolkit will guide you with the
process as you conduct different activities in serving the community. You will be asked to
work in groups and everyone is required to participate in the different activities. As
Mahatma Gandhi puts it, you must be the change you wish to see in the world This is a
not an easy challenge but its a start, a first step towards nation building AND IT STARTS
WITH YOU.

After completing this module, you should be able to:

1. Comprehend the important concepts of community development and community organizing
2. Analyse and examine factors that may facilitate or hinder community development
3. Develop collaboration and interact fruitfully with the community
4. Realize the importance of a CDP (Community Development Plan) in project management
5. Examine who community organizing and development is currently implemented in the
marginalized communities.

I. OCULAR VISIT
Brainstorm among your group members to identify a marginalized community. Point out a
community that is accessible to everyone in your group. Consider the community that is safe and
will readily assist you like Barangay Officials, Community Leaders, NGOs, Parish and school
officials etc. Here are the tasks that you are going to perform when you visit the community. Talk
with each other and assign your group members what tasks they need to perform. Remember,
everyone should participate.
GENERAL GUIDELINE:
Before going to the community, prepare the materials that you will need:
notebook/paper
pen
camera/ audio recorder
Remember to be simple. Avoid bringing unnecessary gadgets.

A. PROFILE OF THE COMMUNITY

It is important to know the community that you are going to serve. How will you get the
profile of the community? You can get data and information in the barangay hall,
interviewing key people and research using the internet. Gather significant data like the
following:
- Brief history of the community
- Map
- Population (estimated number of people)
- Education (low literacy, non-formal, out-of-school youth)
- Health and Nutrition (malnutrition, drug-abuse, maternal health)
- Promotion of Human Rights (Childrens, Elderly, Women, Persons with Disability)
- Other data / statistics available in the community
During your interview it is vital that you should prepare guide questions.. Assign
interviewer(s), researcher(s), photo and video documentation officer(s), written
documentation officer(s).
Show genuine interest and listen carefully to what theyre saying. Respect their ideas. If
you dont understand something, ask them politely to explain it more deeply.

COMMUNITY WALK
Community walk is an activity wherein you will have a walk, literally, in the community.
Invite and ask the assistance of Barangay and school officials and other key persons in the
community to walk with you and take a look at the environment of the community. Take
notes, videos and pictures that you think will help build a clearer picture of whats really
going on in the community. Dont forget to ask permission from the key persons if you can
take pictures around the community. Take note of the following while having a walk in the
community:
- schools
- disaster risk areas
- churches
- private companies
- government offices
- transportation
- hospitals
- livelihood
- health and sanitation
- infrastructure
- peace and order
- non-governmental organizations
- significant structures
- lifestyle and people interaction
- environment
- other organizations that help the community
- other details you might consider as significant to your brainstorming of a project
Make sure that the documentation officers written, video, audio and photo are
capturing everything as you walk.

II. ASSESSMENT
Based on the gathered data, statistics, photos and your experience in the community
walk, you may now have a clearer picture of the community. Discuss and share your
thoughts and insights regarding the issues and realities of the community you have
chosen. Each student should share her/his thoughts regarding the following:
- what are the capacity and vulnerability of the community?
- what are the issues confronting the community?
- based on the interviews and walk, what concerns recurring and what are new?
- why do you think those issues you mentioned are happening in the community?
- what possible solutions can the local government do to address these issues?

- as a group, what possible solutions can you do?

- is there an issue that have been touched by the UNIK seminar and how did the
speakers addressed them?
Assign a group member that will facilitate the discussion, video, photo, written
documentation officers that will record your focus group discussion.

III.PLANNING
Now that you have identified the issues and concern of the community based on your
assessment, it is time to plan.
Among the issues discussed, choose at least 2 identified problems/issues in the
community.
Propose a project that addresses these issues you can use the insights youve gained
from the UNIK seminar as your guide post.
You can watch the video link below for inspiration:
http://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action.html
When creating a proposal, take note of the following:
-

What project do you plan to do? Why?

is it realistic?is it time-bound? is it attainable?
is it significant and the best solution your group can execute in the given
timeline?
Can it be executed with minimal expense?
Is the community involved?
Is there already an existing project in the community that is similar to ours?
what are the things and resources that you need?
What is the most efficient and effective way to execute the project?
What are you criteria in checking if your activity is (was) successful?
Will the community be educated, empowered, inspired and will it build a good
foundation for future projects?

Place your entire proposal in a CDP (Community Development Plan), check eleap for
the format. Pass it on or before the deadline set by your facilitator.

V. REFLECTION
After the activity, meet with the group and the community. Review and evaluate the
activity. Reflect on the following:
1. Based on your community walk assessments and CDP, what are the possible
challenges that you might encounter in implementing your proposed
program/project?
2. What are the possible outcomes of your proposed program/project to the
community? Will it be helpful?
3. What are the difficulties that you have encountered in the preparation of your
CDP for your chosen community?
