Alternative Homepage design justification: This alternative design has lots of features that are
essential to a website. A clear navigation bar goes down the left of the webpage allows users to easily
switch between webpages. The title is at the top centre of the page with company logo on the right
which allows users to recognise the name and logo of the website without getting distracted from the
products that are being sold. A rollover image in the centre of the webpage catches customers
attention and makes them more likely to look at the promoted products. A video also catches
customers attention. As well as these, the website also features a paragraph that tells customers
about the website and what the website does. Finally a footer shows the end user some contact details
and allows them to switch pages quickly without having to scroll back up to the top of the page.
Similarities and Differences: Both webpages contain the following essential features: A
website/company logo, webpage title, navigation bar and footer. These features are essential to a
website because they allow quick navigation between the websites different webpages and they allow
the end user to recognise the website. Quick navigation is important because if a website does not
include this then some users such as elderly may find it difficult to browse the website and find what
they want meaning they may not return in the future as they are unable to use the website.
Recognisability is also important because the end user will want to know that the website is the
website they wanted to visit. If it is unrecognisable then some customers may not use the website
because they do not know whether it is the website they wanted. As well as these, the webpages also
contain similar features such as: A rollover image, a video and paragraphs detailing what the website
is about.
Although a lot of the features on the website are similar. These features are in different locations or
spread out. The navigation bar on the original homepage is at the top and this allows users to instantly
see different webpages they can visit. On the other hand, a navigation bar on the left side of the
alternate homepage allows users to see the navigation bar throughout the page even if they have
scrolled down. Both these positions are useful as they help with navigation of the website and make it
much quicker. The video, rollover image and paragraph/s of text are closer and more centred in the
original homepage and this increase the interest of the customer as they are more focused on the
centre where the products will be displayed. Alternatively in the alternate homepage the video,
rollover image and paragraph of text are more spaced out and less centred. This focuses customers
attention more on browsing the website and looking for different products because the navigation bar
is bigger and products and descriptions are less focused on. Finally the company image and webpage
title is smaller in the original homepage. This allows the website to be recognisable but stops the title
and company logo distracting the customers from the products on the page making them more likely
to buy or browse the products. Equally the title and logo on the alternate homepage are small and in
the corners keeping customers attention on the products. The original homepage colour scheme is
black and red and I chose this because they are very modern colours when put together and they are
relevant to the gaming industry as those two colours are commonly used in the industry. This is
similar to the alternate homepage as the colour scheme black and blue are also used in the gaming
industry so it is relevant.
Preferred Design and Justification:
I prefer the original homepage because I think it looks more professional and more relevant with the
colour scheme. As well as this I believe that the way the webpage is laid out is better as the navigation
bar at the top is useful to customers as they can quickly navigate between webpages and even though
they cannot navigate throughout the webpage if they scroll down, at the bottom of the page, the footer
will contain the same links on the navigation bar meaning customers wont have to scroll back up to
the top to change webpage. Finally I believe the close quarters and centred media focuses customers
attention more on the products than the alternate design which is essential to a retail website.

I chose this to place the company logo in the top left because it allows the website to be recognised
without distracting the end user from the products. The navigation bar was placed at the top to focus
customers on browsing through the website because they are instantly able to choose which page they
want as soon as the webpage loads. I chose the eight pages because they are relevant to the topic
which the website is based on and the contact us, sign up and my account pages allow a relationship
between the user and the website which most other websites do not have. The footer contains links
from the navigation bar in order for the user to change the page they are looking at when they are at
the bottom of the page. The product pictures and information is set in the centre of the page so that
customers attention is focused on the products.
Meeting of the User Requirements:
The website meets the user requirements because it contains all the features specified. The website
features low amounts of media in order to keep loading times fast which is important for users. As
well as this it also features clear navigation with a easy to read navigation bar at the top of the page.
This allows customers to navigate through the website quickly and efficiently as they are able to
browse as soon as the website loads. The website does contain different media from videos to pictures
and this keeps the customer interested in the website. As well as this the website also has an
interactive feature in the form of a user form which customers can fill in. Finally a Google Map will
also be placed on the Contact Us page making it far easier for the end user to contact the website.
Meeting of the Websites Purpose:
This design meets the websites purpose because it shows it is a commerce website through the range
in products provided and the ability to purchase specific items from the website. The website also
shows it is a gaming website because it uses commonly used colours from the industry and the
products provided relate to the gaming topics.
Website constraints:
Creating and uploading an eight page website may put a strain on the internet provided by the school.
By uploading a large sized website, upload times may increase significantly and it may affect other
users by slowing down the internet connection. The hardware provided to make the website (Adobe
Dreamweaver) is very expensive and would cost the school and normal every day users a lot of
money if they wanted to get the software at home in order to work on the website outside of school.
The school computers may also affect the development of the website because they will not be as
powerful compared to other computers which are specifically used by professionals to make websites.
This may make development of the website harder and a longer process.
