TASK 1
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Entrepreneur is person who operate, organizes and assumes the risks of a
business. To be an entrepreneur is not an easy things, it takes a lot of efforts and
patient. Anyone can stars a business, but to a successful entrepreneur they should have
those traits. The traits are networked, open risks taker, observant, visionary, open
culture, outcomes oriented, team oriented, proactive, and use a failure as an option.
Those traits are really important to an entrepreneur because with this traits will lead
them to become a successful entrepreneur and also bring successful to their business.
For networked means that an entrepreneur has to developing and using contact
made in business for purposes beyond the reason for the initial contact. Open risk taker
is the prospect of making our own decisions and being charge of our own destiny is
worth it. Observant which is mean that is highly insightful of customer needs. Visionary
is they can see the future, future a word that is efficient or more open or more
collaborative. Then, open culture is construct a culture that will be conducive for your
industry so company culture matches the culture around open source and people who
want to involve in open source feel at home.
Outcomes oriented is took time to clearly define what it is that they want to do. They
stop and thought about their life and it was that they wanted to accomplish and this
gave them the drive to see the task all the way to its outcome. Team oriented mean
recognize the roles and contributions of others and applauds their efforts sincerely.
Lastly, proactive is creating a situation by causing something to happen.

SADE 1013

2.0

PROACTIVE
Proactive means attitude shows by people such as change-oriented, self-initiated
behavior in situations, usually in the workplace. It also means by controlling the
situations rather than waiting for something to happen. Proactive employees
generally do the things directly, they do not need to be asked to act. (webster,
1993)
Proactive treat in entrepreneur defined as people who are committed with their
work that they are doing. They also wanted perfection in every single of the work.
Besides, they are people who are creating and controlling the situation.
People believe that if an entrepreneur have proactive treat, they can easily
control the company and easily go through in any kind of problem that comes.
This is because there are many factors that would happened such as economy
factor and the competitors.(rooy, 2014)
LORI GREINER
Successful traders share a number of qualities with successful entrepreneurs.
This is not surprising, as trading is all about defining, discovering, and realizing
value in a marketplace. Both successful traders and entrepreneurs have a
proactive side to their personalities, they possess a vision of what they want and
work in a directed way to achieve it. As Lori Greiner astutely observes, it is this
drive that leads entrepreneurs to work long hours to avoid working the standard
work week. (steenbarger, 2014)

2.1

VISIONARY

Visionary come from the word vision. Vision means what we see by the imagination that
we make. In other words is the ability to see what others cannot see. It means we
4

SADE 1013

create a picture in our mind about what we wanted to produce exactly. The visionary
entrepreneur is able to see exactly what his or her business is going to look like in every
detail when it is finished. (Joe love and JLM &associates, 2005)
Entrepreneurs have a curiosity about what would happen in the future if they wanted to
make some decisions. They will imagined another world about the decisions and try to
think from the positive and negative sides.
ELDAD MATITYAHU
EldadMatityahu saw beyond his two thriving frozen-yogurt stores. He'd been reading
about the fiber-optic space and decided he wanted in on the technology sector that
surrounded him in Silicon Valley. So he sold his yogurt shops and his Harley and got
into a field he knew nothing about. He took a job with a fiber-optic company to learn the
business and discovered his niche there.
Customers told that they are frustrated because couldnt see who was on their networks
important for security. "I realized there was no solution on the market addressing this
pain point," Matityahu says. "I took the time to figure out why."
"Entrepreneurs often face nay sayers, because we see the future before the future plays
out," Matityahu says. "You have to be several steps ahead of the market." (luckett,
2015)

2.2

NETWORKED

Networked can be defined as relationship that we make among people around us. This
relationship can be inform among people who we are first meet or people did not have
any related family with us.
Networked entrepreneurs means developing and having a relation among people for the
purpose of business from the initial contract. For example, a sales representative may
ask a customer for names of others who may be interested in his products.
Many people are put off by the idea of networking because they will get a lot of
information from the others. Different people will give different ideas. A good networked
should be supportive, sincere, friendly, a good listener or someone who follows up and
stays in touch.
Many people go to networking events, but very few know how to practice it effectively.
Networked is more than just getting out and meeting people. Networking is like get to
know people who will do business with you or introduce you to those who will.(luckett,
2015)
RICHARD J. ANTHONY
Richard J. Anthony, Sr., founded The Entrepreneurs Network (TEN) in 2000 in response
to a flurry of inquiries from people in their 40s and 50s who wanted to apply their C-level
experience to buying or starting a company. An entrepreneur, angel investor and former
CEO of a major consulting company, Rick understood the difficulty of making the
transition from corporate cocoon to self-employment and self-reliance. The first meeting
of six aspiring entrepreneurs has since evolved to a series of five three-hour meetings
each year and a data base of over 1000 people who receive notices of the meetings.
(R.Anthonyst, 2015)

2.3 OUTCOME ORIENTED

Successful entrepreneurs will design and manage the goals and vision of the business.
Entrepreneurs are always focused on results-oriented standard and quality of highly
valuable employees who will gain a competitive advantage with other competitors in the
same sector that can bring in substantial revenue. This is because users always
comparing the quality of a product prior to having it. Through results-oriented
entrepreneur characteristics entrepreneurs strive to produce quality products that meet
the needs and requirements of the customer and enable businesses to grow and move
forward. (Habshah, 2010)
STEVE JOBS

The entrepreneurs who have entrepreneurial-oriented features are the result of Steve
Job, who was a leader in the computer industry and is characterised by creativity and
innovation. He was the founder of the Apple Computer Corporation and is the richest
man before the age of 30 years. He was leading the Corporations next computing
system offer educational programmes, but he found business opportunities in the field
of computer hardware over high profit opportunities relative to computer software. Until
now, the Apple brands has captured the hearts of fans around the world, causing
gadgets Apple acquired the company profits many times over.
In the late of 1970s, Jobs with Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple), Mike Markkula and
others, they developed and marketed one of the successful line of personal computers
on the market, the Apple II series. In 1996, Jobs served as Chief executive officer in
Apple Company from 1997 to 2011. In 1986, he remained CEO and majority
shareholder at 50.1% until Pixar was bought by The Walt Disneys largest individual
shareholder and also member of the Board Directors Disney.

SADE 1013

2.4 TEAM ORIENTED

Team oriented is one of the characteristics of a successful entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs
who have features like this would be easier to control and manage his business
compared to other entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs seeking to do business smoothly
through team oriented. This is because, entrepreneurs will create several groups
according to the expertise possessed by employees in the company. Therefore, the
companys profit generating process will be more smoothly and orderly. (Saad, 2010)
ANANDA KRISHNAN

Entrepreneurs need to be smart in the distribution of workers in several groups

according to their skills and expertise so that employees can carry out their work in a
group with either. For example, two of the leading entrepreneurs in Malaysia, Tan Sri
Ananda Krishnan.
The interesting fact about him is he does not manage all of its business for himself, but
he relinquished that responsibility to some individuals of high calibre professional

in

create a proactive group in business. Among the evidence of the success of Tan Sri
Ananda Krishnan are three main company has been in Malaysia Stock Exchange
namely Astro, Maxis, and Bumi Armada. Although he felt the consequences of success
and failure as well as an entrepreneur, he still continued his efforts to expand and
further develop the companies they own up to the global level. The spirit and the heart
of a viscosity entrepreneur like Tan Sri Ananda Krishnan needs to be a good example to
all aspiring entrepreneurs in Malaysia.

SADE 1013

2.5 OPEN RISK TAKER

Another traits of entrepreneur is risk taker. As we all know, managers are always faced
with making decisions and deciding throughout their work day. Some decision are
routine or easy for them, while others are sometime complicated and risky. Certain
types of people enjoy taking risks, while others would prefer stability and averse to all
kind of risk. A risk taker is someone who will risks everything in hope of achievement to
their company or accepts greater potential for loss in doing decisions and tolerate
uncertainly. In contract, there are, managers who are kind of risk averse, and they
choose options that need fewer risks and also prefer familiarity and certainly
(Lombardo, Risks Taker on Business)
RICHARD BRANSON
As for the example of entrepreneur that has risk taker traits is Richard Branson. He is
English businessman and investor. He is the one who best known as the founder of
Virgin Group, which had comprises more than 400 companies. At the young age about
sixteen years old his first business venture was publish magazine called Student. Taking
on risks is known as the great way of getting out from that rut.
At Virgin, he has used two types of techniques to free their team from the same old
routine that breaking records and also making bets. Taking chances or taking risks are
known as a great way to test himself and his entire group. Those skills are needed
because he and his team were facing the adversity at some point.
For instance, the businessman and adventurer of Steve Fossett flew Virgin Atlantic
Global Flyer nonstop around this globe, becoming the first person that complete such a
flight solo and also without refueling. Their plane was built by using carbon fiber, at a
time when the other plane was manufactures relied primarily on the heavy materials.
One of the great benefits of taking on challenges in your working life is that you and
your team learn can to confront risk together and also experience to lose sometimes,
because then you are make a good wager, the odds of the success, working out is what
the worst possible consequences the would be, then deciding whether accept or not.
(Brinson)

SADE 1013

2.6 FAILURE IS AN OPTION

Failure is definitely a word that understandably and sometimes carries a negative
connotation for those who heard of this word. Actually nobody wants to fail even just for
once but if were doing something that is worthwhile, is inevitable. However, the most
important thing is we need to plan for the failure, learn something from it, try the best to
avoid any damage and do our best to recover it gracefully without any hesitation.
(DECKELMANN, 2012) Sometimes, someone needs to face one failure or more before
he can grab the success. Moreover, failure is actually the state of still not meeting a
desirable or any intended objective and this may be viewed as the opposite of the
success. (Definition of failure by Merriam-Webster) So, when we are success it means
that we have met that desirable. Entrepreneur who was facing this trait is :
WALTER ELIAS WALT DISNEY
He was born on 5 December 1901 at Chicago, Illinois, US. His occupation was a cofounder of The Walt Disney Company. He was also an American entrepreneur, a
cartoonist, an animator, a voice actor and a film producer as well. Moreover, as an
animator and entrepreneur, Disney was particularly noted as the most popular showman
for all his life, as well as an innovator in animation and theme park design.
At first, Walt was fired by one of a newspaper editor. The reason was he lacked
imagination and had no good ideas at all. Then, he slowly started a number of
businesses but unfortunately it didnt last too long due to several reasons and ended up
with bankruptcy and failure at that time. He kept plugging along and luckily then he
found a new recipe for success that is really worked.
The most important thing is Walt Disney holds the record for both the most Academy
Award nominations and also the number of Oscars awarded himself. Moreover, he also
earned four honorary Oscars in his life. Then, his last competitive Academy Award was
posthumous. He is so incredible and amazing.
Thats why sometimes what drives us crazy is actually a driving force that fetches us
forward to the goals that we want to achieve exactly because it is never a piece of cake
or easy to become influential, popular and earn billions overnight but actually there are
a lot of unbound struggles, overriding ambition and a strong faith in oneself that can
make one a successful person. We just need to bear with the hardship at first then the
success will come to us and shine our life.

SADE 1013

2.7 OPEN CULTURE

It is a concept according to which knowledge should be spread freely by someone and
its growth must be coming from developing, altering and collaboration without being
restricted by rules linked to the legal protection of intellectual property (OPEN
CULTURE:A DEFINITION, 2001). A successful entrepreneur will try hardly to create
something different from others in order to maximize their income of business.
Observant is very important for entrepreneur to develop their business and to make
their company as the famous one. Entrepreneur who has this trait is :
JAMIE OLIVER
James Trevor Jamie Oliver, MBE is an English celebrity chef, a restaurateur and
actually a media personality known for his global campaign for better food education.
Fifteen is a restaurant that was built by him personally. This restaurant initiative was
named for the 15 young people who originally entered apprenticeships under his
program. Since the first establishment opened, Fifteen has :
1. Delivered very delicious Italian foods to patrons and had opened two other
restaurants in Amsterdam and Cornwall as well.
2. Trained 220 young locals in the art of cooking and hospitality and had inspired
many of its graduates to pursue successful careers in the restaurant business
exactly.
3. Reinforced the value of local produce and cooking technique.
Therefore, this is the open culture that has been made by Jamie Oliver to introduce his
Fifteen Restaurant and food receipt especially to other country.

11

SADE 1013

2.8 OBSERVANT
Observant can be defined as someone who is very good at noticing things, or someone
who is really follows the rules and all the requirements of a particular religion.
(OBSERVANT, 2015) Entrepreneur will observe the community or what his environment
lacks and needs. He should have sturdy shoulder to put an extra weight of carrying
responsibilities that will change his life. Entrepreneur will observe on how people are
living and surviving at certain places, what are the best things that he can gives to them,
it is either goods or services in order for people to improve their lives in that community.
Entrepreneur who has this trait is :
JACK MA
Jack Ma or Ma Yun is a Chinese business magnate and also a philanthropist. He is also
a founder and an executive chairman of Alibaba Group, which is a family of highly
successful Internet-based businesses. Jack Ma realised that certain customers did not
have times to go shopping because of many reasons. Thats why he built a website that
named Alibaba.com, which is a business-to-business portal to connect with the Chinese
manufactures especially with overseas buyers. Luckily, two of Alibabas portals handled
1.1 trillion yuan ($170 billion) in sales in 2012. While in 2014, Alibaba is planning to
enter India and was in talks with Snapdeal which is an online marketplace, New Delhi,
India. So, this is the chance for Alibaba to spread their influence to other country so that
they can be more famous and successful in the future. This is the reward for Jack Ma
because of his good observant towards people and environment and also for his
willingness in grabbing the chance before others.

3.0 SECTION B

SADE 1013

BILL GATES was born in Seattle, Washington on 28 October 1955. His fathers name is
William H. Gates that works as prominent lawyer and his mothers name is Mary
Maxwell Gates works as a board of director for First Interstate BancSystem and also the
United Way. Her grandfather JW Maxwell is a national bank president. Gates has one
elder sister and one younger sister name Kristi (Kristianne) and Libby respectively. Early
on his life Gates parents had a law career in mind for him. (Bill Gates.Forbes, 2015)
At age 13, he enrolled at lakeside school, one of the private preparatory school. At age
eighth grade, the Mothers Club at that school buy a teletype model 33 as terminal.
Gates very interest in programming systems and was excused from math classes to
pursue his interest. His first computer program is an implementation of tic-tac-toe that
allowed everyone to play games against the computers. After that, he realized the
computer is very close to him, he used computer almost 20 hours per day.
Now, Gates is best-known as one of the billionaire in the world. This entrepreneur has
created the personal computer revolution (Microsoft). Microsoft became the worlds
largest PC software company. In 1987, Gates was included in the Forbes list of the
wealthiest people in the world. On January 1 1994, Gates get married with Melinda
French. They got three children Jennifer Katharine (born 1996), Rory John (born 1999)
and Phoebe Adele (born 2002). (WANBA, 2008)
13

SADE 1013

To be a billionaire entrepreneur, Bill Gates has some traits to make sure he is a

successful person until now. The first trait is networked. Bill is a networked person
especially at the first time he wants to open his own company of Microsoft. The persons
who are really at her back are Paul Allen, RicWeiland and Kent Evans. These persons
are really helpful to Gates since in colleague till they died. Gates formed venture with
Paul Allen called traf-o-data to make traffic counters based on Intel 8008 processor. Not
only that, Gates also contract micro instrumentation and telemetry system (Mits), to
creators the new microcomputers to make sure they more success if they together with
one of the old company to sprite their knowledge in computers. This are the example of
networked that Bill Gates do before to make sure he success as right now.
Next, Bill Gates also an open risk taker. He makes a decision over his parents to open
his own company although he is younger that time. He wants to create his own software
company. Gates also advise an algorithm for pancake softing as solution of series of
unsolved problems presents in combination class by Harry Lewis, who is his professor.
Gates solution held the record of the fastest version over thirty years his solution
formalized in a published paper in collaboration with Harvard computer scientist named
Christos Papadimitriou. This example show Bill Gates is an open risk taker.
(SHERIDAN, 2014)
Bill Gates also a proactive person. Everyone knows Gates as American business
magnate, philanthropist, investor, computers programmer and inventor. These things
show Gates are very proactive person. Gates and her wife created the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation. This foundation is to help people especially children to more
knowledge about computers and also help who are poor. This example shows Gates is
a proactive person.
Visionary means a person who has the imagination and inspiration to see how thing are
going to develop in the future. For example Bill Gates knows his future is to be a
successful person in computer even he falls in his study. Bill Gates and his business
partner Paul Allen, used technological innovation, keen business strategy and
14

SADE 1013

aggressive business tactics, they built the largest software business named Microsoft.
This trait is used by Gates to success.
The last trait that Gates practice in his mind is team oriented. Bill Gated formed a
venture with Paul Allen, called traf-o-data, to make traffic counter based on Intel 8008
processor. After graduation Gates remained in contact with Allen and he joined at honey
well during the summer 1974. The following Year Bill Gates and Allen saw the
opportunity to start their own computer software. Bill Gates is always with Paul Allen if
he wants to create new software. It means that Gates is a person who has team
oriented.
Based on the explanation above, we can conclude that Bill Gates is one of the
successful entrepreneur who has this following traits which are networked, open risk
taker, visionary, proactive and team oriented. Therefore, Bill Gates is the best example
of entrepreneur in this whole world and he also can be an inspiration to other
entrepreneurs especially for those who wants to start a new business. Hopefully that
they can learn a good example from his story.

4.0 CONCLUSION
Entrepreneur is someone who was exercises the initiative by organizing a venture to
take benefit of an opportunity and as the decision maker, decides what and how much
of a good or service will be produced. An entrepreneur supplies risk capital as a risk
taker, monitors and controls the business activities. The entrepreneur is usually a
15

SADE 1013

partner or the one who owns the majority of shares in an incorporated venture. Not all
entrepreneur are created for the same blueprint. They come from different geographic
locations, upbringings, income brackets and social classes, as well as education levels.
While there isnt a fool proof map to entrepreneurial greatness, one thing is consistent.
A successful entrepreneur should have the characteristics as visionary, proactive, open
risk taker, team oriented, outcome oriented, networked, open culture and makes failure
is an option. All these characteristics is important for a person as entrepreneurs to
ensure a successful entrepreneur produce something according to their goals.
Some of the most successful entrepreneurs took major risks, and they paid off in a big
way. Shark Tancs Barbara Corcoran turned a $1.000 loan into a $5 billion dollar real
estate business that she sold for $66 million back in 2001. When most people hear the
word risk they relate it to a financial risk, but in the case of Corcoran, the initial
financial investment wasnt very risky. The risk came into play when she went all in,
devoting 100 percent to making her business work with such a small amount of speed
capital. Many would assume it isnt possible to start a business with very little money,
but those who arent afraid to take risks dont see things such a limited funding as a
handicap.
