Examples of Practical Usage of

Hydraulic Jumps
CIVL252-Spring 2005; Prof. M.S. Ghidaoui

Energy Dissipater: Dissipate energy in water flowing over dams, weirs and other
hydraulic structures. The aim is to minimize scouring.

Examples:
Stilling Basin:

Increase the water level: Hydraulic jumps allow a quick transition to high water
level. This can be useful for irrigation and other distribution purposes.
Increase Weight: Hydraulic jumps induce a large rise in water depth; thus,
increase the weight force and the hydrostatic pressure. This can be useful to
reduce the uplift on a dam as well as to reduce the net pressure force on a dam.

Increase mixing: mixes chemicals used from water purification or reduce

concentration level of pollution at the discharge from ocean outfalls.

Increase aeration.

Remove air pockets in water supply lines.

Increase the water level under a sluice gate.
