Hydraulic Jumps
CIVL252-Spring 2005; Prof. M.S. Ghidaoui
Energy Dissipater: Dissipate energy in water flowing over dams, weirs and other
hydraulic structures. The aim is to minimize scouring.
Examples:
Stilling Basin:
Increase the water level: Hydraulic jumps allow a quick transition to high water
level. This can be useful for irrigation and other distribution purposes.
Increase Weight: Hydraulic jumps induce a large rise in water depth; thus,
increase the weight force and the hydrostatic pressure. This can be useful to
reduce the uplift on a dam as well as to reduce the net pressure force on a dam.
Increase aeration.
