1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
Fantasies: Students will come to school motivated and most of my time would be spent teaching and
preparing cool lessons.
Reality: Student dont come to school on equal footing, many are victim to family problems and abuse.
Students abilities vary widely from mentally retarded to genius in the same class. Most time is spent on
working around the districts requirements and consulting with parents.
2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
I have a bachelors in science and an associates in education. There is continuing training issued by the district
often as well as training over the summer.
3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
Arrive to school early, on 3 days a week give tutorials. Check and answer emails, teach for 6 periods a
day, get 30 minute lunch break and 45 minute period to conference with parents, grade papers, answer
emails, etc
4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?
I am under a 3 year contract that is renewed. Salary increases have become smaller or nonexistent. I feel
secure in my position currently. I am worried the future will hold the privatization of education, and I
wonder how that will affect me.
5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?
$40,000-$60,000 depending on experience and education.
There is potential for financial growth as you gain experience and advance your education. The only
room for promotion exists in teaching higher grade levels or moving to administration.
I use tablets every day for warm up activities. I develop guided reading assignments that accompany the
online textbooks. I use the tablets to play review games prior to giving tests.
The tablets fit both of those descriptions. They can be an improvement when they function properly, and
when students come to class with them charged. They are also a distraction because to a lot of the
seventh graders they seem to treat them like digital crack.
Students are excited to have the devices, but when they do not work properly, they get discouraged
quickly. Generally speaking, the students seem to enjoy having them when they are functional.
10. Do you believe that the district made the right choice issuing them individually or should they have
made it a classroom asset?
I do not have an opinion on this question. If integration of technology is deemed important to the
decision makers in our district, then I will do my best to make the most of the new equipment. That said,
I DO wish more extensive training had been given to teachers prior to rolling out the devices to students.
