earths original forests have been
wiped out.

What is it?
A forest is not just trees. The ecosystem in a forest is very different
and the wildlife and climate is very
specific.
Soil: the soil contains humus which is
an organic component made from
decaying plants and animals.

Why is it a territory
The boundaries of a forest are clearly
defined and ownership is specified.
Entire communities are created in or
around the forests.
The forest is a source of revenue.
The revenue creates towns and as a
result infrastructure.

More than just trees

Revenue through harvesting.

Roads are built
Silvicultural: a practice that ensures
any use of the forest allows for
regeneration and maintenance.

Types of Forests
Tropical Rainforests
Temperate Forests
Boreal Forests

Tropical Rainforest
Tall trees, warm climate and lots of
rain (up to one inch/two and a half
cm of rain everyday)
They can be found in the tropics
which refers to the area between the
Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of
Capricorn.

What makes a rainforest?

80 inches (200 centimeters) of rain
per year.
Canopy:
layer of branches and leaves formed by
closely spaced trees
Most of the plants and animals live in
the canopy
The canopy may be 100 feet above the
ground.

Tropical rainforests support the greatest

diversity of living organisms on Earth.
Although they cover less than 2% of
Earth's surface, rainforests house more
than 50% of plants and animals on Earth.

Temperate Forests
Often referred to as deciduous
forests because the large amount of
deciduous trees.
Deciduous: trees that lose their
leaves and grow them back

Where are they?

Temperate forests are found
throughout regions known for a mild
climate.
They can be found in such countries
as: Canada, US, China, Japan, and
most European countries.

Facts
Temperate forests are often
considered secondary forests as they
have been harvested and replanted
due to industry.
The largest tree in the world is found
in California. This giant sequoia tree
is 275 feet tall and 95 feet around.

Boreal Forests
Made primarily of coniferous trees.
These "softwood" trees usually bear
cones and include pines, spruces,
firs, and cedars.
Canadas forests are 75% Boreal.
This is due to the fact that Boreal
forests grow in colder climates.

Where are they?

Boreal forests are found throughout
Northern Europe, Russia and Canada.
These forests are the most sparsely
populated in the world.
