My Unit Plan

-Title, Grade, and Time Allotted:


*Introduction to the Elements of Design: Line, Color, Shape,
Texture, Space, and Form
*Introduction to Art (Grades 9-12)
*15 Days (Monday-Friday, Monday-Friday, Monday-Friday)
Example: August 25-29, September 1-5, and September 812)

-Expectations and Standards:


*ART.I.VA.EL.1: The use of materials, techniques, media
technology, and processes to communicate ideas and
experiences.
*ART.I.VA.EL.2: The use of art materials and tools safely
and responsibly.
*ART.I.VA.EL.3: To use visual characteristics and
organizational principles of art to communicate ideas.
*ART.V.VA.EL.1: To explain how visual arts have inherent
relationships to everyday life.

-Objectives:
*The students will know how to use artistic materials safely,
responsibly, and effectively in these mini projects of the
elements of art.
*The students will know how to use these materials to
communicate their ideas and relate them to their personal
experiences.
*The students will know how to organize their ideas in
artistic projects.
*The students will know how to connect their artistic abilities
and the visual arts to every day life.

-Instructional Procedure/Steps/Task Sequence


and Analysis:
*Line (for Monday, August 25th to Tuesday, August
26th; review and assessment on Friday, August 29th)

Monday, August 25thMaterials:


Artist Journals, pencil, paper, found objects (I provide all)
Anticipatory Set:
I will know what the element line is, where I can find it in the
real world, and how I can use it in my art projects (not only
this line mini project, but in all of my projects)
Direct Instruction:
In the beginning of class, I will have students write in their
artist journals for their bell work. I will ask, What do you
think the element of line means? Name one object you can
think of that uses any form of line. I will then give the
explanation of line. I will show them pieces of art work from
history and explain how line is used. I will also ask the class
where they see line in these famous works.
Guided Practice:
As I show slides of these famous works, I will have students
use their artist journals to demonstrate the use of line in
these works. We will then talk about it as a class.
Independent Practice:
The students will then sketch and demonstrate line in their
journals by themselves.
Closure:
I will discuss what we will do the next day concerning line. I
will also mention the assessment and review on Friday. There
will be a small introduction for the next day.
Tuesday, August 26thMaterials:
Artist Journals, pencil, paper, found objects (I provide all)
Anticipatory Set:
I will know what the element line is, where I can find it in the
real world, and how I can use it in my art projects (not only
this line mini project, but in all of my projects)
Direct Instruction:
I will have a box of objects in the front of the room. I will
have each student come up and choose an object (they will
be called by table). I will have the student look at the object

and write in their artist journals how line is being used in that
object.
Guided Practice:
We will have a class discussion on the class from yesterday.
What did you learn yesterday that would be applied to
todays lesson?
Independent Practice:
Each student will get the rest of the period to do his or her
mini projects. They will draw in their artist journals exactly
what they see in the object. What type of line is there? What
type of line quality is being used? Where else have you seen
this line in your life? What is the significance of this line?
Closure:
Review the lesson for that day. I will also remind everyone of
the review and assessment that is Friday. I will also mention
the next element of design we will be talking about.
*Color (for Wednesday, August 27th to Thursday
August 28th; review and assessment on Friday, August
29th)
Wednesday, August 27thMaterials:
Artist Journals, pencil, paper, found objects (I provide all)
Anticipatory Set:
I will know what color is and how to use it in my artwork. I
will also know how it is used in my every day life. I will make
connections with color in my life. I will know how to connect
color with emotion.
Direct Instruction:
We will go through slides together as a class showing famous
work of art, and I will ask the questions: What type of color
do you see? Does it set a certain mood? For this subject
matter, what type of color palette would I use? They would
write these responses in their artist journals. I will also talk
about the meaning of color and the definition of color. I will

give a brief history of color theory and how the color wheel
came to be.
Guided Practice:
We will go through a slideshow of famous art works as a
class, and I will ask them out loud what they see in the
images pertaining to color.
Independent Practice:
The students will then elaborate their ideas in their artist
journals.
Closure:
We will discuss what we learned today regarding color. I will
also give a short introduction to the lesson for tomorrow. I
will tell the students about their first assessment on Friday
regarding both line and color.
Thursday, August 28thMaterials:
Artist Journals, pencil, paper, found objects (I provide all)
Anticipatory Set:
I will know what color is and how to use it in my artwork. I
will also know how it is used in my every day life. I will make
connections with color in my life. I will know how to connect
color with emotion.
Direct Instruction:
Each student will get the rest of the period to do his or her
mini projects.
Closure:
We will review what we learned in the class today and also
discuss how it related to the previous lesson. I will mention
our next element for tomorrows lesson. I will remind the
students about assessment one regarding both line and
color.
Friday, August 29thAssessment 1
*This will be a performance assessment. It will show me
what they learned from both line and color. It will also show
me if the students need additional practice before they take

the summative assessment after all these lessons pertaining


to all of the elements of design.
*Shape (for Monday, September 1st to Tuesday,
September 2nd; review and assessment on Friday,
September 5th)
Monday, September 1stMaterials:
Artist Journals, pencil, paper, found objects (I provide all)
Anticipatory Set:
I will know what shape is and how it relates to art. I will also
know how it is significant in my every day life. I will
recognize how shape is being used in my surroundings.
Direct Instruction:
I will explain what shape is and how it is used in artwork. I
will also show slides of famous artwork and ask what they
see in the pieces. Where is shape being used?
Closure:
I will close up by reviewing what we learned for that day
about shape. I will also introduce the mini project for the
next day.
Tuesday, September 2ndMaterials:
Artist Journals, pencil, paper, found objects (I provide all)
Anticipatory Set:
I will know what shape is and how it relates to art. I will also
know how it is significant in my every day life. I will
recognize how shape is being used in my surroundings.
Direct Instruction: The students will have the entire period
to work on their shape mini project.
Closure:
We will have a brief review and introduce the lesson for
tomorrow. I will also remind them about the assessment on
Friday.

*Texture (for Wednesday, September 3rd to Thursday,


September 4th; review and assessment on Friday,
September 5th)
Wednesday, September 3rdMaterials:
Artist Journals, pencil, paper, found objects (I provide all)
Anticipatory Set:
I will know what texture is and why it is important in the arts.
I will also understand how texture is used in my every day
life. I know how to effectively use texture in my artwork.
Direct Instruction:
I will explain what texture is and how it is used effectively in
art. I will go through a slide show of famous pieces of
artwork and ask the class to get in groups and discuss what
textures they see in the artwork.
Closure:
I will have a brief review on what we learned today on
texture. I will also talk about what we will be doing for
tomorrows lesson.
Thursday, September 4thMaterials:
Artist Journals, pencil, paper, found objects (I provide all)
Anticipatory Set:
I will know what texture is and why it is important in the arts.
I will also understand how texture is used in my every day
life. I know how to effectively use texture in my artwork.
Direct Instruction:
The students will have the period to work on their mini
projects regarding their found objects and texture.
Closure:
We will have a brief review of texture. I will also mention the
next element we will be learning. I will give a reminder about
our assessment on Friday regarding the elements shape and
texture.

Friday, September 5thAssessment 2


*This will be a performance assessment. It will show me
what they learned from both shape and texture. It will also
show me if the students need additional practice before they
take the summative assessment after all these lessons
pertaining to all of the elements of design.
*Space (for Monday, September 8th to Tuesday,
September 9th; review and assessment on Friday,
September 12th)
Monday, September 8thMaterials:
Artist Journals, pencil, paper, found objects (I provide all)
Anticipatory Set:
I will know what space is and how it is important in art. I will
also know how to relate it to my every day life and how it is
import in the world around me. I will also know how to apply
space in my artwork.
Closure:
We will review the element for today, and I will mention the
plan for tomorrow. I will remind the students about the
summative assessment on Friday.
Tuesday, September 9thMaterials:
Artist Journals, pencil, paper, found objects (I provide all)
Anticipatory Set:
I will know what space is and how it is important in art. I will
also know how to relate it to my every day life and how it is
import in the world around me. I will also know how to apply
space in my artwork.
Closure:

We will review the element for today, and I will give a short
introduction to the new element for tomorrow. I will remind
the students about the final summative assessment on
Friday as well.
*Form (for Wednesday, September 10th to Thursday,
September 11th; review and assessment on Friday,
September 12th)
Wednesday, September 10thMaterials:
Artist Journals, pencil, paper, found objects (I provide all)
Anticipatory Set:
I will know what form is and how and I can use it effectively
in my art projects. I will also understand the importance of
form and how it is used in the world and in my every day life.
Closure:
We will review the element for today and talk about our mini
projects for tomorrow. I will remind the students about the
review and summative assessment on Friday.
Thursday, September 11thMaterials:
Artist Journals, pencil, paper, found objects (I provide all)
Anticipatory Set:
I will know what form is and how and I can use it effectively
in my art projects. I will also understand the importance of
form and how it is used in the world and in my every day life.
Closure:
We will review the element for today. I will remind the
students about the review and summative assessment on
Friday regarding the elements space and form.
Friday, September 12Assessment 3
*This will be a performance assessment. It will show me
what they learned from both space and form. It will also
show me if the students need additional practice before they

take the summative assessment after all these lessons


pertaining to all of the elements of design.

-Three Assessments within the Unit:


*Assessment 1
There will be a short review and formative assessment on
both line and color. This assessment will let me know if the
students are ready to take the final assessment containing
all elements of art. I will attach a filled-out feedback sheet.
*Assessment 2
There will be a short review and formative assessment on
both shape and texture. This assessment will let me know
if the students are ready to take the final assessment
containing all elements of art. I will attach a filled-out
feedback sheet.
*Assessment 3
There will be a short review and formative assessment on
both space and form. This assessment will let me know if
the students are ready to take the final assessment
containing all elements of art. I will attach a filled-out
feedback sheet.

-After the unit


*The week after this unit will consist of additional practice
relating to any of the elements of design. The date of the
summative assessment regarding all elements will be
determined depending on the grades of the formative
performance assessments, which are mentioned in the unit
plan.
