The Great Vaccination

Debate
First Things First

Your body takes about a week after contracting

a disease to figure out how to fight against it.
Unfortunately, that can take too long
sometimes.

Vaccines are little bits of a disease that have

been broken down and made harmless, then
they are injected into your body to prepare your
immune system for the real deal.

This way when the real disease comes along,

your immune system is more than ready to take
on the challenge; if anything it has a one up on
its opponent.

Answers to Your Important

Questions: The Facts

Why do I have to get a flu shot

every year if the vaccine makes
me immune to the virus?

As you become immune to attackers, they adapt

to try and get around your immunity so every year,
scientists must try and predict which string of the
flu will be the big one to vaccinate against every
flu season.

Dont Vaccines Cause Autism?

It was discovered that Andrew Wakefield (the man

behind the claim) had falsified the data, and paid
children at his sons birthday party for blood
samples. Celebrities eventually caught on to the
trend of keeping your children unvaccinated and
when Wakefields wrongdoing came to light, his
paper was retracted and his medical license was
also taken away.
Scientists are not sure of what exactly causes
autism but it is understood to have a foundation of
developmental disorders which are completely
unrelated to vaccines.

The ingredients in vaccines

frighten me.

People are afraid of what they do not understand

and as a result, anti- vaccine advocates share the
lists of ingredients and let the fear of the unknown
take over.
A lot of people also forget about healthy and
unhealthy dosages. For example: water is good
for our bodies but drinking too much will kill you.
Plus, all of the scary chemicals in a vaccine are
approved by the FDA.

Why are there still people who are

against vaccines even with all of
the data that has been collected?

The anti-vaccination movement is ironically a lot

like the pathogens that vaccines protect us from.
This is because each time science proves the
anti-vaxxers wrong, they change their stance to
something else that still involves being against
immunization.

Some people do not want to

vaccinate themselves anymore.
Isnt that their choice?

It is their choice to vaccinate or not but their

choice does not just affect them and them alone.
Herd Immunity is an important benefit of
vaccination.
If there are enough people vaccinated, then a
disease has more difficulty spreading. This helps
protect people who are not vaccinated due to
being too young, or they may have an underlying
medical condition, or they are simply allergic.
When more and more people stop vaccinating,
diseases such as the measles and whooping
cough break out again like we are seeing in 2015.

What exactly are the risks of

vaccinations?

Most of the risks involved with vaccination are

minor and may include redness, muscle soreness,
fever, or a headache.
There are more serious risks but those are
unbelievably rare.

Myths About the Flu Shot

You Dont Need the Vaccine

Keeping yourself safe

is not the only reason
to get vaccinated.

Children under 6
months cannot get the
flu vaccine and so
their safety does
depend on the rest of
us getting immunized.

"I was petrified when I first heard there was a

whooping cough outbreak at the school," says
Russ. "I cried all night. Infants who catch it can stop
breathing and not start again, or be on respirators. I
kept the boys home to protect the baby, who hadn't
been immunized. The school understood and
supported my decision. ~ Gigi Russ

The Flu Vaccine Can Give You the

Flu

Injected flu vaccines

only contain the dead
virus: so it cannot
infect you.

However, nasal
vaccines do indeed
contain a live flu virus,
but they are designed
to remove the parts of
the virus that make
people sick.

If You Get the Flu, You Cant Get it

Again During That Flu Season

This is definitely not

the case.

Both type A and B

influenza circulate, so
it is possible you could
be infected with both
types in a single
season.

Antibiotics Can Fight the Flu

Antibiotics have no
effect on any strain of
the influenza virus.

Antibiotics only fight

bacterial infections;
the flu is a virus.

The Outbreak Game

But how does all this relate to

education?

Ethical Dilemmas: If
you know a child isnt
immunized and could
potentially have a
virus, do you remove
him or her from the
classroom in order to
protect the other
students who arent
immunized?

Compromised Immune
Systems: Katies Story

Students

Knowing the risks of vaccinations, how do you weigh the

risks to an individual of getting the disease versus the
risks of the vaccine itself?
How would you weigh those risks against the benefit to
society as a whole?
As a teacher how would you approach the ethical
dilemmas that coincide with immunization in schools?
What are some examples?
How does immunization affect children? Should
vaccines be mandatory in schools to protect children like
Michael so that he can have a normal education
experience? Or should parents have the right to choose
to not vaccinate their children which results in children
like Michael not being able to have those normal school
experiences that we all take for granted?
Is there a right or a wrong answer?
