an innovation. They will also learn about revolutionary examples of inventions

how to make inventions better and what an innovation is.

At the Littleton Elementary School District, we use Beyond Textbooks for our curriculum. In this curriculum map, it will be
focusing on sixth grade material in science and math. There is one section of gifted students and another section of lower students.
Overall, the students in the classroom are at a sixth grade level at Collier Elementary School.

Environment Health
Standard: G6. 2S.C2.PO1 I can describe how scientific understanding changes in response to new information and discoveries

In this science standard, the students are supposed to learn about how scientific discoveries can help everyday life. Another
part of the standard is for students to understand how science evolves and becomes better over time. A lot of different inventions were
created to help make life easier; however, some inventions had some negative outcomes that can outweigh the benefits of the
invention. Students need to understand that innovations can help make better working and more environmentally safe inventions. For
example, cars, factories, and many other inventions can negative effects on the environment.
For this mini lesson, students will be given an invention that has had negative impacts on our world. The students task will be
to work in their groups to figure out how to solve the issue. After they work it out in their groups, they will share to the class how they
would innovate the invention. For their exit ticket to measure understanding, the students will have to talk about the positive impacts

of being environmentally healthy. For them to completely understand the lesson, they have to be able to understand what it means to
be environmentally healthy and how they can help their community be environmentally healthy. Before giving this lesson, the teacher
will give them background knowledge and examples about some inventions that are not good for our society and why.

Sleep
Standard: 6.M.EE.B.07 I can solve real-world problems using one-step equations

Sometimes math can be a very hard subject to connect with other contents. By implementing students culture and everyday
lives in math problems, it helps them understand and retain the lesson better. By using word problems in math it can be easier to
accomplish this. It can also be easier to interconnect health education in your math problems as well.
In this standard, the teacher can create word problems related to sleep to talk to students about how important it is for them to
get enough sleep every night. The word problems can be based off of real sleep facts to help the students understand how sleep can
effect their lives if they get too much or too little.
After teaching the math lesson, the teacher should ask the students if they have any other addition questions about sleeping
right. By giving students this time to ask questions they can learn more about the importance of sleep. It would also be helpful for the

teacher to give the students homework word problems that were also related to sleep facts. For the exit ticket, the teacher should have
a math and sleep related question to know that the students retained the information that was taught.
Sun Safety
Standard: G6.6S.C1.PO4 I can analyze the interactions between the Earths atmosphere and its bodies of water.

Sun safety is extremely important for all people, including students, to know about. Some students only wear sunscreen before
they are going swimming or know they are going to be outside for a long period of time; however, sunscreen needs to be applied
everyday. As educators, we need to help students understand the importance of wearing sunscreen and how often they need to apply
it.
One standard that can easily connect with sun safety is a sixth grade science standard about the atmosphere. For this standard,
the teacher can talk about sun safety while going over the different layers of the atmosphere. Once they get to the thermosphere, or the
closest layer to the Earth, the teacher can discuss how the sun can affect people. Some issues they can talk about is sunburns and skin
cancer. More importantly, students need to know that just because they do not get a sunburn, that that doesnt mean that they did not
get effected by the suns rays. By connecting this information with the standard, it will help students be more cautious when they are
going outside for any duration of time.

For their activity, the students will make their own individual posters about what each layer of the atmosphere is. For this
project, they will get a poster that they will correctly label the layers. In each layer they can draw pictures and write about what
happens in each layer. For the layer closest to Earth, they also have to write about how to be safe in the sun based off of what we
talked about in class.
