Sometimes we think that Native Americans arent around very much
anymore. As a class, weve already talked about how there are a lot of Native
Americans around still today! Not only are there Native Americans who live in Grand
Rapids, but there are also a few places in Grand Rapids that were created to honor
Native American culture and how it affected our city. Today we are going to learn
about some of those places!
Have a student volunteer read the few sentences following #1 (Ah-Nab-Awen
Park)
Go through the pictures and talk about the park a little bit
- Elaborate on the sentences the student read aloud
Ask students to share a time theyve been to that park or if theyve seen it
before
Have students fill in an interesting fact for the park
Follow this procedure for the other places
Once you get to The Traditional Three Fires Powwow show the two video
clips on the powerpoint
Have students point out a few different things they noticed were interesting
from the videos to fill in for their interesting fact

10-15
min

Have students turn to their KWL charts

Have students share some of the new things they learned and write them
down on the big KWL chart in the room
- *each student must write down at least one new thing learned in their charts,
and show the teacher
If there is extra time, allow students to work on the extra activity pages in the
back of the packet
