Unit: Problems without Regrouping

Topic: Addition without
Regrouping
Goal(s):
TLW gain a better understanding of the process of adding without regrouping.
Objective(s):
TLW define the steps of solving an addition without regrouping problem.
TLW solve addition without regrouping problems on the flap by drawing pictures of base
ten blocks and an HTO chart.
TLW illustrate the problems by using their bodies as base ten representatives for the
game.
TEKS: 2.7C
Materials/Resources/Technology needs: pencils, scissors, class set of foldable,
whiteboard, and expo markers

Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event: Addition without Regrouping Game

Teaching/ Learning Procedures:

After the game is over, then the students will sit back on the bus where the teacher
will then ask questions about how they think the game went.
The teacher will then reveal the name of the game and tell them that they were
doing addition without regrouping problems.
The teacher will then talk about every step that goes into solving an addition
without regrouping problem by showing each step on the board as she solves one
for the class.
The teacher and class will then do one problem together. During this the teacher
will ask questions about each step of solving the problem.
The class will then do one together with little teacher involvement. She will have
the class say each step of the process while they work on the problem.
The teacher will then explain the foldable that they are going to do.
The students will then create the foldable. By making sure to follow the steps that
was talked about.

Formative Check (ongoing or specific): Asking questions throughout the

lesson. The teacher will walk around the tables while the students are working on
their foldable and offer assistance when needed.
Reteach (alternative used as needed): Pull small groups and teach using
the base ten blocks on easier problems
Closure: The class will come back together for another addition without
regrouping problem. The teacher will ask the entire class for each step before she does it.
If the class cant provide the step then the teacher will give prompts to help them out.
Assessment/Summative Evaluation: Addition without Regrouping Foldable
________________________________________________________________________
Modifications/Notes:
SPED: They will have a foldable with easier problems on it that will still have the same
concept.
GT: They will have slightly harder problems on their foldable to complete.
Steps of Solving:
1. If the problem is horizontally written then the problem needs to be rewritten
vertically.
11
a. EX. 11+21= needs to be re written as +21

2. If it doesnt need to be rewritten then they are to check that the bigger number is
on top.
a. EX.
21
+11
_
3. Then they are to draw the number using base ten blocks. By drawing the base ten
blocks in the HTO chart.
a. Ex.:
H
T
O

4. They are then to add the ones together by counting all the ones together. Writing
that total not only underneath the ones place in the problem but in their HTO chart
as well.

a. Ex.:
H

2
5. They are then to add the tens together by counting all the ones together. Writing
that total not only underneath the tens place in the problem but in their HTO chart
as well.
a. Ex.:
H
T
O
3
2
6. They are then to make sure that their sum matches the sum in the HTO chart.
a. Ex.:
H

O
3

21
+11
32

7. They are then to check to make sure all their work is shown.
Addition without Regrouping Foldable Rules:
1. They are to write their name.
2. They are then to cut it out.
3. Then they are to fold it hotdog style.
4. Then they are to cut the flaps.
5. They are to draw the two numbers using base 10 blocks.
6. They are to solve the problems by counting the base ten blocks.
7. They are to write the sum on the flap.
