1. What do the
acronyms RTI,
PBIS, and MTSS
stand for?

1)RTI-Response to Intervention
2)PBIS-Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
3)MTSS-Multi-Tier System of Supports

2. What are Tiers in

RTI/MTSS?

Tiers refer to the steps of intensive instruction found in the

model. The higher the tier, the more intensive and
individualized the instruction becomes

3. What are some

benefits of RTI?

Highly focused and individualized interventions, as well as

closely monitored progress. Universal screening to
determine students who are in need of intervention. RTI is
designed with the general curriculum in mind, which
serves as an integration tool for special education
students. The basis for learning is the same, its the
intervention intensity that changes.

4. Why is progress
monitoring important
in RTI/MTSS
models?

Progress monitoring is important because of the varying

levels of intensity each intervention has. It is vital to know
if and how effective these interventions are to provide to
most bang for the buck, as it were, as well as maintaining
progress already achieved. Progress monitoring is the
lynchpin to any multi-tiered system so that responses can
be timely and directed.

Question

Your Answer

5. What role do
evidence-based
interventions play in
RTI/MTSS?

Evidence based interventions play a critical role in

RTI/MTSS, in that they provide concrete, tested protocols
that are not only legally demanded by NCLB and IDEA,
but are scientifically proven to have efficacy, thus avoiding
trendy protocols that may gain popularity but ultimately fail
under the burden of classroom rigor.

6. What roles do
special educators
play in RTI/MTSS
models?

Special educators work primarily with students most in

need of individualized, highly intensive interventions (Tier
3) and, to a lesser extent, groups of students in need of
more help (Tier 2).In a broader sense, special educators
are a key part of a collaborative team that make the RTI
process flow smoothly from one tier to the next as
needed.

7. With whom do
special educators
collaborate when
working under
RTI/MTSS models?

Special educators collaborate with general education

teachers, speech and reading specialists, school
psychologists, stakeholders for those students deemed to
need Tier 3 instruction, parents and caregivers of Tier 3
students, essentially anyone who is involved in a students
IEP.

8. Why do special
educators have to
collaborate with
multiple school
personnel in
RTI/MTSS models?

To maintain consistency in all school settings, foster a

sense of commonality between the various school
personnel (Timmy is our student, rather than your
student) and pool the schools resources to maximize
effectiveness.
