Lesson Plan 1
Subjects: Weather expressions, the verb hacer, weather activities
Objectives: Students will be able to:

Identify which weather expression correlates to a picture

Describe their favorite weather in simple terms

Standards:

1.2.1- Demonstrate comprehension of basic words and phrases spoken in the target
language, spoken by native and non-native speakers.
1.1.2- Make basic requests and ask simple questions.

Materials:

Overhead projector
Weather scene pictures
Weather clothes: sunglasses, hats, coats, umbrella, etc.
Cards with weather expressions on them
Common weather activity vocabulary lists
Conjugation chart

Activities/Procedures:

Warm up: Students are asked to make a brief list of the different kinds of weather that
happens throughout the seasons (in English). The teacher calls on a number of students to
share their answers. The teacher then explains that the students will be learning the
vocabulary for weather expressions using the verb HACER, and other types of weather
expressions (2 min).
Teacher presentation: The teacher pulls out pictures with the weather on them, and asks
what is the weather like in Spanish. One by one the teacher holds up the pictures and
allows students who may know the answer some time to respond. If none of the students
know the answer, the teacher answers the question, and asks the students to repeat (4
min).
Example:
Qu tiempo hace en esta imagen? Hace sol. Repitan por favor...Hace sol.
Comprehension Check: The teacher puts all of the pictures back. One picture is shown at
a time and the teacher calls on students for the correct weather expression. The
comprehension check is done two times (4 min).
Activity 1: The students are to get into groups of eight. The teacher passes out one item to
half of the group such as an umbrella, a coat, a sweatshirt, sunglasses, etc. The other half

of the group is given cards with certain weather expressions on them. Each student is to
find their pair in the small group. The teacher is to show an example of the activity before
the students get into their small groups (4 min). If a group is to finish faster than the
others, then they can try and have a conversation regarding what they personally would
wear in a certain type of weather.
Example:
Student with umbrella matches with student whose cards reads, Llueve.
Student with sunglasses matches with student whose card reads, Hace
sol.
Teacher presentation: The teacher shows the different forms of hacer used in a story
shown on the projector. The teacher then asks the students to identify which form of
hacer they have been using, and what they think it means. After the students have figured
out which form, the teacher shows the conjugation chart for hacer, emphasizing that it
means to do or make. After the verb hacer is explained, the teacher presents common
activities that a person may partake in during a certain type of weather. The students are
then given a short vocabulary list that visualizes these words (6 min).
Comprehension Check: The teacher calls on students asking them what they do when the
weather is a certain way. The teacher gives the students two options to choose between.
(5 min).
Example:
Que haces cuando hace buen tiempo?
1. Va a un picnic?
2. Juega en la nieve?

Activity 2: Pair Work- Students work in pairs following the pattern of the comprehension
check that the teacher modeled. They go back and forth asking each other what they do in
certain weather conditions (3 min).
Activity 3: Writing Activity: Students working individually are asked to write a simple
story regarding their favorite type of weather (6 min). If not finished it becomes
homework.
Activity 4: Students are to individually think of places around the world where each
weather expression usually occurs and write short sentences about them. (5 min).
Example:
Hace sol.
En California hace sol.

Wrap-up/Closure: The teacher has students come up to the front holding a sign that says
the weather expression in English. The teacher then calls on students sitting down to give
the Spanish equivalent. The teacher makes sure to switch out which students are holding
the signs so that every student gets a chance to answer. (4 min).

Wrap up/Closure: The teacher puts a blank verb conjugation form on the overhead and
asks students to fill in the conjugations for the verb hacer (2 min).
Wrap up/Closure: The teacher asks the students to describe in simple terms the weather
yesterday, today, and what they think it will be like tomorrow (2 min).
Clean-up: Students gather materials, clean room, and prepare to leave (1 min).
Exit Slip: Students are to hand in a picture of their favorite activity that they like to do
cuando hace buen tiempo (1 min).
