CURRICULUM MAP
In preschool in the Roosevelt school district, there isnt a set curriculum map, so what I
will be presenting, will be the curriculum that we use, along with standards that could be tied in
along with the studies that are taught through the year, hopefully mimicking what a curriculum
map would create.
At MLK Early Learning Center, we use the following items, the Arizona Early Learning
Standards, Teaching Strategies Gold, and The Creative Curriculum.
Anchor Standard: (Science) S1.C1.Ib- . Identifies attributes of objects, living things, and
natural events in the environment.
SWBAT:
List characteristics of living things
Can name what living things need to live
Can describe events in the environment
I.e.- Can talk about how the sun is essential to help plants grow
Teaching Standards GoldScience and Technology
Objective 25: Demonstrates knowledge of the characteristics of living things
Objective 27: Demonstrates knowledge of the Earth's environment

Anchor Standard: (Science) S1.C1.Ie- Asks and responds to questions about relationships of
objects, living things, and events in the natural environment.
SWBAT:
Describe what we need to do to keep the earth healthy.
List ways we can help the earth.
Think critically about what would happen if we didnt take care of the earth.
I.e.- Can say how humans can help the environment

Teaching Standards GoldScience and Technology

Objective 27: Demonstrates knowledge of the Earth's environment
Anchor Standard: (Social Emotional) S1.C2.Ia- Associates emotions with words, facial
expressions and body language.
SWBAT:
Name emotions
Describe how they look
Name how they feel
I.e. - Mad- the feeling, what it looks like
Teaching Standards GoldSocial-Emotional
Objective 1: Regulates own emotions and behaviors
a. - Manages feelings
c. - Personal safety

This curriculum map was created for a Head Start Preschool Classroom. There are two
sessions a morning, and afternoon. Each class maxes out at 17 students, for a total of 34
students.
Beginning of the year- sleep

CURRICULUM MAP

(Social Emotional) S1.C2.Ia- Associates emotions with words, facial expressions and body
language.
This lesson will take place throughout the day, being that it is preschool and students are
not to be sitting for too long. So the day will start with singing, If your happy and you know it.
And going through the different emotions such as happy, sad, angry, tired, silly, and worried.
Teacher will ask the question of the day which is: What can you do if you feel tired? Students
wont answer the question right away.
They will tell the teacher what they want to explore and will go off to centers, where one
of the centers will be a reading center, where student can listen to a book called Time To Sleep
by Denise Fleming. Which is about a bear who is about to enter hibernation, because its that
time of year, and she wants to say goodbye to her friends first.
Before the transition to go outside, the teacher and the students will come back to large
group where students will answer what you can do if you feel tired. And the teacher will present
information about how students need sleep to function and be successful every day. Then at story
time after outside time, teacher and students will read Time to Sleep, together so everyone gets
the information reinforced.

Environmental/Sustainability
Anchor Standard: (Science) S1.C1.Ie- Asks and responds to questions about relationships
of objects, living things, and events in the natural environment.
During the study on Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling, we can add in information
to students about how we, as people affect the environment around us, and how we pollute

CURRICULUM MAP

everything, by doing things such as littering and not recycling. Because this is a large concept, it
will be broken down day by day, focusing on one question at a time, starting with what is one
way we can take care of the earth? This will be our question of the day. Students will not answer
right away, and will select what center they want to go to.
The small group instruction this day will be a school clean up, where the students
and one teacher will partake in a nature walk, where they will pick up items that are harmful to
the environment. Teachers and students will have a talk about how littering, and not picking up
after yourself, makes the world get sick, which is something that the students can relate to.
At the end of the day, during story time, the teacher will go to YouTube, and pull up
and audio reading of the Lorax, for students to listen to. Teacher at the end will ask students if
they think using too much of something, would make it go away? Students will then be prompted
to go find their names on their journal, and draw or write what they think might happen.

Sun Safety
Anchor Standard: (Science) S1.C1.Ib- . Identifies attributes of objects, living things, and
natural events in the environment.
During the tree unit, students will be outside often measuring trees, or looking at tree
parts, so during one of the days, students and teachers will learn about sun safety. The question

CURRICULUM MAP

of the day will be, how can we keep ourselves safe when we are outside? Students will then
choose where they would like to go, for centers and then the students will go there.
The small group this day will be talking about how we have to take care of ourselves
when we are outside. Teacher will show a picture of a tree with its trunk painted white. She will
ask students if they have seen this before. Teacher will explain that those tree are wearing the
paint because it is like sunscreen. It keeps the tree from getting sunburned. Then teacher will ask
the students if their parents have ever put sunscreen on them? Teacher will continue the
comparisons, with leaves and hats, and how both trees and people need to drink water. Before
going outside, students will be able to answer the question of the day.
