Dear FIU Board of Directors,

Hello, my name is Faland Jeanty and I am currently a junior at FIU. I have been chosen
to be an advocate for the students that have disabilities at our school. Over some decades our
world has evolved to where we have accepted those with disabilities. We have learned that a
disability doesnt describe what a person can do. Disability is defined as a physical or mental
condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities. This definition indicates that
there are some limits to what a person with disability is capable of doing, but they are not
entirely incapable. Therefore, as an advocate for people with disabilities, I believe FIU should
have adapted sport and recreation programs for students with disabilities on campus.
To continue, inclusion is the first step we must consider when dealing with disabilities.
Inclusion means that we celebrate our diversity and differences with respect and gratitude (John
Dattilo, PH.D. 2012). With this in mind, the students at FIU that have certain disabilities should
be able to participate in sports and recreation programs. Modification and adaptation can make it
possible for students that have disabilities able to participate. Having accessibility in recreation
and sports programs can be beneficial for the students, school, and the community.
Furthermore, with these adapted sports and recreation programs the student will feel more
involved in the school activities, thus this can help with their self-esteem. These programs will
also benefit the community around FIU because it will have everyone come together and help
develop appreciation for one another. FIU is committed to the following core values: Truthin
the pursuit, generation, dissemination, and application of knowledge, Freedomof thought and
expression, Respectfor diversity and the dignity of the individual, Responsibilityas stewards
of the environment and citizens of the world, and Excellencein intellectual, personal, and
operational endeavors. As stated, if these values are what make FIU unique we should include
the students that represent our diversity and appreciate what they can bring to FIU. With that
being said, as an advocate for people with disabilities I believe we should stand behind our
mission statement and values and make accessible sports and recreation programs for students
with disabilities. Thank you for your time in reading this letter and I hope this will help the
voices of student with disabilities be heard at our campus.

Warm Regards,

Faland Jeanty
