What are Biofuels?

Biofuels

Why do we need biofuels?

How its made?

BIOFUELS

Biofuel is any fuel that is

produced from organic materials.

All biofuels come from biomass.

Biofuel can be solid, liquid, or

gas.

Three basic categories biofuels:

Bioethanol
Biodiesel
Other

biomass

BIOMASS

Biomass is biological material derived from living, or

recently living organisms.

Biomass is biological material which can be used as

fuel or for industrial production.

Sugarcane

Wood

Soybeans

BIOETHANOL
Bioethanol

is an alcohol made by
fermentation.

fermented

by yeast (Saccharomyces
cerevisiae )

Primarily
High
Gas

used in cars.

efficiency compared to gasoline.

emissions are not so harmful to the

environment.

BIODIESEL
Biodieselrefers

to a vegetable oil.

made

by chemically reacting lipid

(soybean oil) with analcohol producing
fatty acid esters.

Most

commonly made from soybeans.

substitute for diesel fuel.

Primarily

used in truck.

OTHER BIOMASS
Example:

Burning wood chips and paper.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Advantages:
More

environmentally friendly than fossil

fuels.

Can

More

efficient than fossil fuels.

Easy

in production.

Can

reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Disadvantages:
Can

interfere with biodiversity (deforestation).

More

expensive than fossil fuels.
