Managing assignment extensions with anonymous marking

The following guidance is intended for staff at the University of Bath who wish to
utilise the anonymous marking functionality in Moodle, along with making use of
Turnitin to generate similarity scores and originality reports for submitted work.
It assumes some prior familiarity with the Assignment activity and Gradebook.
Further information on this can be found at https://wiki.bath.ac.uk/x/uwJ0Aw
Step 1: Create and set up a single assignment activity
Set the Allow submissions from date (when you want to accept submissions from) and
Due date (the assignment deadline).
The Cut-off date (after which no submissions will be accepted) can be left disabled to allow
for any late submissions after the deadline or after any extensions that may have been
granted.

You can choose to notify graders (markers) about late submissions (against the normal
deadline and any extension deadline) so they dont miss any marking.

For each late submission, markers will get an email that looks like this:

Graders will not receive an email notification when those granted extensions have submitted
unless they submit late after the extension deadline.
You should set the Assignment activity to work in Group Mode, including the selection of
Separate Groups.

It is assumed that you will have set Blind Marking to Yes and set up Turnitin and Gradebook
options appropriately to enable anonymous marking. Additional advice on this area is
available at https://wiki.bath.ac.uk/x/iRijBQ

Step 2: Setup Groups to Manage Extensions/Resubmissions

Please note that should you have several different extension deadlines, then you should
create a separate group for each deadline e.g. Extensions1day, Extensions1week, etc.

Step 3: Returning to the Assignment activity

Prior to any submissions being made by student, the assignment activity will be displayed as
is shown below.

After clicking on the View/grade all submissions link, the grading interface will look as
shown below:

Step 4: Creating Groups and updating their membership

You will need to add students to an extensions group, which can be done at anytime. There
are two ways to add students to groups
a) This can be done either through the Administration menu and then selecting Users >
Groups

b) or alternatively, by reviewing the list of enrolled users through the Administration menu >
Users > Enrolled Users

In the list above, you can see that one student (Keith Brown) is already a member of the
Extensions group. Note that students can be a member of more than one group.
To place a student in a group click the people icon in the Groups column. You can then
select the appropriate extension group from the drop down menu as shown below.

Step 5: Applying Extensions

You should go to the relevant Assignment activity to set the new deadline(s) for students
with. Should you have several extension periods and therefore extension groups, you will
need to set a new deadline for each of the groups (as detailed in Step 4 above).
Select the appropriate Extensions group from the separate groups drop down menu, as
shown in the top left below. You can then allocate a new due date for each member of the
group, one by one as shown here

Alternatively, you can apply the new Due date to all members of a the group as a single
action by selecting the Select check box and then choosing the Grant Extension option
from the With selected drop down menu at the bottom of the page.

Clicking Go will set the same date for all group members.

If you need to change the extension for a particular student then from the participants list find
the student in question and allocate them to the new group. Next, go into the relevant
Assignment activity and click View/grade all submissions.

From the Separate groups drop down menu select the extension group you have just
assignment the student to. Locate the anonymous participant in the list whose extension date
does not match the rest in that group. Adjust the extension date to be that students new
deadline i.e. the same as the other students in the group.

Step 6: Marking assignments (including those with an extension)

After receiving submissions from students the assignment activity now looks as shown
below.

Here, the Due date has passed. The summary above indicates that at least one submission
is still due. Further submissions will be accepted but flagged as late.
Sorting the submissions by Status will list all the extensions at the top, then all the other
submissions where the normal deadline is in effect, followed by non submissions.
Within each of these categories the most recent submissions are nearer the top of the list i.e.
ordered by date.

Markers can choose to download all or just download a group of assignments to mark e.g. all
late submissions or all extensions by checking the boxes next to the chosen assignments
and choosing the Download all (With selected) item from the Grading action drop down
menu.
Markers may also want to lock selected assignments to prevent further submissions after
marking has commenced so it is clear what has been downloaded for marked. See below for
an example screen shot.
