. Differentiated instruction is where the teacher changes the curriculum
based on the students needs and learning styles so that they are the most
successful. Multiple strategies are used to implement instruction and
assess the students.
. Significant ways that differentiated instruction differs from traditional
classroom instruction are that assignments are based on the students
individual needs, there are a variety options a student has to choose from
to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the concept,
teachers really get to know students and use their interests in the
classroom, and students are grouped for their instruction.
. Teachers can get to know their students and their interests by having them
do journal entries, talk about it with the class, through observation, and
getting to know the students parents and communicating with them about
their interests, goals, and needs. Its important to know their readiness,
interests, and learning profile. Their readiness and learning profile can be
found out through observation and their understanding of assignments.
Their readiness can also be learned through work samples and their prior
academic record and work.
. Ms. Hasbro needs to give the students more options to express their
knowledge. Some students thrive when it comes to participation in class
and test taking but there are others who would rather give a presentation or
write a paper to express their knowledge. It is unfair to only offer one
choice. Ms. Hasbro can lecture but she also needs to include other ways of
teaching not just primarily lecturing. Every student has different learning
styles so it is important to have group work, presentations, videos, and
even text to go along with each lesson so that every childs learning needs
are addressed, not just those who learn best through lecturing. She should
have students choose how to express their knowledge and be
understanding that some arent sufficient test takers. She should either give

them the option of doing something other that a written test or try to teach
the material in a different way so they are able to grasp the concept and
retake the test. Also give more options for how assignments can be done
and maybe only take some points away for each day it is late instead of
making it an automatic zero. As for groups, it is important to have a mixture
of learning levels in each group, not all of the same. That way students can
learn from each other and can learn different approaches and learning
styles that they may have not been aware of before.
