Equipment: Ping-Pong balls, one-table and 20 ounce hard plastic cups.
Description of Activity:
This activity will begin by having the participants assist in placing the cups on to
the middle of the table. When all the cups are placed in the middle of the table, have
participants divide evenly at each end of the table, for example if there is six
participants, then three players will be on the right side and three players will be on the
left side. The game will begin by having players alternate by taking turns. Set distances
away from each cup, leaning close to the cup is acceptable. The objective of the game
is to bounce the balls within a certain time. For this game we will give each participant 2
minutes to bounce as many balls into the cups as they can. The therapist will be
keeping tally of the scores and returning the balls back to the participants so they get to
play as much as possible in the given time. The person who scores the most balls will
be the winner.
This activity can also be played outdoors by using PVC pipes which should be
bolted to a flat square shape wood surface and using light weight washers instead of
ping pong balls. After everyone had had a turn and the winner was announced, have a
discussion with participants about the game. Ask questions like did you find this activity
hard? If so why? and are there some things about the game that can be improved?
These types of discussion questions will allow therapists to improve their activity for
future events.

Leadership considerations:
This activity works best for large groups because it allows for a more competitive
feel. If it were to be only two participants, then the activity would be rather short. The
area that the activity is best performed is either indoor or outdoor. The therapist is very
involved with the group in the beginning because they will be explaining the activity and
instructing everyone where and what to do. After the therapist has completed their task
instructing the activity, they will be actively taking score for each participant and making
sure that participants always have a ping-pong ball to throw. A safety hazard to be
aware of is that participants to do not aggressively throw the balls. This can hurt other
participants. Topics of discussion are selected by what the participant have said from
the qualities and will be adjusted to the participants needs and interests.
Adaptations:
*Participants with Visual Loss:
For ease in moving through the environment, people with visual impairments use
sighted guide. These participants use sighted guide by grasping onto the visual person
bicep. The visual impaired participant walks besides about half step behind. This
technique can be used when throwing the ping-pong. The visual participant can
describe where the cup is and how much force to exceed to be able to make the ball in.
This also allows participants to promote social interaction.
*Participants with Autism Spectrum Disorder:
Participants with Autism Spectrum Disorder have trouble socially interacting with
other individuals. To help ease these participants, it is recommended to begin the
activity is a small amount of participants (3-5 participants). Once the therapist feels that
the participants is comfortable with the 3-5 other participants then increase size of group
slowly. A benefit that participants with Autism Spectrum Disorder gain from this activity is
the action of repetitive patterns. They will be able to express this action when throwing
the ping-pong balls, but limit these participants. The limit amount of time they can throw
the ball will allow them to take more control of their actions.
