EDUC 5324: INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY INTO EDUCATION
Name: Samim Cetinkaya

Date: 09/20/2015

Topic Selected:
Teachers need to be trained and go through professional development in order to
successfully implement technology into education
1. LITERATURE REVIEW:
What does the literature/research say about this issue/topic? By using NAU
Library or Online Search engines, conduct a literature review.

You need to include 5 different sources (book, journal article, web article
etc.) in your review. Try to use current sources as much as possible.

You need to summarize and synthesize your sources by discussing a

common theme or issue.

You don't need to critique your sources

You don't need to evaluate your sources (if the sources are trustworthy,
weather the author has a bias or not)

You need to provide background information such as history and

definitions

Brief Literature Review:

Training teachers for technology has started with invent of personal
computers.

Teacher training institutions addressed professional development

needs for technology through in-service programs. Teachers attended workshops

or returned to graduate school to obtain advanced degrees. In 1983, when the
report A Nation at Risk recommended that students be required to take a highschool computer course, it was still unusual for a preservice program to offer
technology training for new teachers. ( Moursund, David; Bielefeldt, Talbot, 1999)
Preparing teachers for schooling in the emerging information-based
society requires a new vision of teaching and associated expectations for staff
development. Administrators must communicate this vision so all educators in the
system understand it, and they must support teachers pursuing training in this

area (Boe, 1989).

Increased access to information through new technologies, along with the
need to prepare children to compete in an emerging information-based global
economy, promises to fundamentally reshape school practice as we move into
the next century (Harvey & Purnell, 1995; Jonasson, 1993)
Even when professional development opportunities for technology are
available, personal anxiety associated with such opportunities results because
teachers arrive at the learning environment with an immense range of abilities
and specific developmental needs. As a result, classroom teachers should be
involved from the beginning in planning the development sessions so they can be
certain their specific needs will be addressed (Guhlin, 1996)
The environment in which the effective technological development of
teachers occurs is built around collaborative learning. Because teachers vary in
their level of expertise at the time of their training, the context which surrounds
their technological professional development must provide a non-threatening
environment that is sensitive to the individual teacher's level of expertise and
experience (Browne & Ritchie, 1991; Shelton & Jones, 1996).

2. REFLECTION:

What is your personal opinion on this issue? Do you agree with the
research? If you agree or disagree, please explain why?
Provide examples/experiences regarding this issue from school
perspective or If you are not working in a school, from your profession. Be
specific with your examples. You can mention software/hardware names,
specific methods that you plan to use, etc.
How would you implement this research in your career? (At least 1
paragraph)

Reflection:
Teachers have one of the most challenging job. They always have to upgrade
themselves to teach the students more effectively.
I agree with Boe, because we have to have new vision on integrated
technology into education and this is not going to be happen without
administrators support.

I dont agree with Guhlin, because he says even technology workshops

are available for teacher they will have anxiety I dont think teachers will have
anxiety about going workshop. Because in our school almost all the teachers
going to different kind of workshops I talk them, I dont see any teachers have that
kind of anxiety.
He also says that every teacher has different kinds of needs to go to the
workshops. I agree with him, this is also not going to be problem because
agencies hold many kinds of technology workshops for teachers to go and join
I have a coworker at our school she is kind of old and she didnt even
know how to connect laptop to projector. Our principal assign her to an
experienced teacher, that teacher learn a lot by getting help from that experienced
teacher.
When school administrator planning workshops or other personal
development programs I will contribute them to make the plan even better by
telling them about this research.
