HEALTHCARE EXPERIENCE
Work Experience
- Children's Hospital of Michigan
Molecular Biology Laboratory Assistant
June 2014 August 2014 for a total of 153 hours.
I worked as a Laboratory Assistant in the Hematology/Oncology Lab 3X68/3X60 under Dr.
Yaddanapudi Ravindranath, through the Wayne State University School of Medicine. I worked
approximately 22 hours per week running DNA Polymerase Chain Reactions on various patients'
samples to determine which mutations on the UGT1A1 gene cause Gilbert's Syndrome. My time
in the lab was especially enriching as I learned to work efficiently and independently as I spent
many hours setting up and running samples alone in the lab. I also studied many medical articles
to learn more about the nature of our study. However, after testing over 80 patient samples for
6 known genetic mutations, we did not gather any new results. Our findings only confirmed
previous studies. I learned that often times researchers conduct several studies before making a
novel discovery and that research requires a lot of diligence, dedication, and hard work.
Volunteering
- Clare Bridge Memory Care Facility
Student Volunteer
10/26/12 to present: 78 hours to date.
I assisted the nurses and aides in caring for the residents, all of whom had some form of
memory loss such as Alzheimer's and dementia. I passed out snacks, recited spiritual readings,
and played games with the residents to help them relax and stay physically and mentally
active. I learned that while the ultimate goal of healthcare is to cure, there are many conditions
and patients that cannot be cured. Therefore, it is our responsibility to ensure that they lead the
best possible life and help them minimize the effects of their chronic affliction.
- Providence Park Hospital, Novi
Providence Park Teen Volunteer Program
10/12/13 to present: 156.5 hours to date.
I volunteered as Patient Transporter and Medical/Oncology (4C/D) Volunteer Aide and as
Transporter. As Transporter, I transported discharged patients to the hospital lobby. On the
4C/D floors, I passed waters to and chatted with the patients. I removed dirty linens, restocked
supplies, made beds and aided the Nurses and Techs in providing patient comfort. This
experience enabled me to spend time one on one with each patient. Often times, we chatted
about their families, childhood, and even my schoolwork. I would then complete small
household tasks to help the patients feel more at home. Through these short but meaningful
visits, I learned the attributes of empathy, tact, responsibility, and altruism that will guide me in
my future healthcare career.

Job Shadowing
- Providence Park Hospital, Novi
Cardiac Cath Lab
4/8/14 and 4/10/14 for a total of 16 hours
Observed with Manager Jack Cain and various cardiologists. Observed 2 pacemaker implant
procedures, an implantable cardiac defibrillation (ICD), and a cardioversion. I learned about
arrhythmias and the use of a synchronized delivery of an electric shock to restore regular heart
rhythm. I also observed a percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and the stenting of an iliac
artery along with 3 heart catheterizations. This experience allowed me to shadow in both the
clinics (noninvasive cardiology) and the Cath Lab (invasive cardiology) and taught me more
about the complex heart functioning and the various types and treatments of heart disease. I
worked with the entire Cath Lab team and their ongoing communication and cooperation taught
me the skills required to be an integral part of a healthcare team.
- Providence Hospital, Southfield
Medical Skills Field Study
6 West Nursing Unit (4/22/14), CVICU (4/29/14), NSICU (5/6/14), Physical Therapy
(5/13/14) and Radiology/CT Scan (6/3/14) for a total of 10 hours.
This opportunity allowed me to explore the different hospital units and get a feel for the wide
variety of careers in the healthcare field. Since this shadowing was an enrichment of our Medical
Skills Field Study and Terminology course, we had lengthy discussions about our experiences in
the various units. This allowed us to learn from each others' experiences. The days we did not
visit the hospital, we learned medical terminology in class. These terms come in use when I
read any medical articles or my science textbooks and will continue to be of great use in my
future healthcare career.
- Huron Valley Sinai Hospital
Emergency Room
6/23/14 to 6/27/14 for a total of 30.5 hours
Shadowed Dr. Nancy Walter and Dr. Matthew Compton. I was present for various interesting
cases including the transfer of a critically ill brain tumor patient to the Detroit Receiving Hospital
to be prepped for an emergency surgery. I also observed a John Doe brought in who was
announced dead at the door due to significant trauma to the head. The fast-paced environment
exposed me to the ongoing demands healthcare professionals face. I observed simple cases
dealing with hand lacerations to the complex diagnosis of an appendicular abscess. The patients
ranged from young children to a 99 year old. These few days in the E.R. exposed me to the
demanding and realistic aspects of healthcare that are often hidden to the public. I realized that
although a medical career is fun and rewarding, physicians work very hard each day to provide
their exemplary services.
- Huron Valley Sinai Hospital
NICU/Harris Birthing Center
7/1/14, 7/3/14, 7/7/14 and 7/8/14 for a total of 30 hours
Shadowed with Neonatologist Dr. Shahida Khan and the in house Pediatricians. I observed 3
caesarean sections, one normal vaginal delivery, and two circumcisions. I observed a child in
Recovery who was suspect for pulmonary edema and was transferred to the pediatric floor. I
spent time with 3 babies in the NICU and observed how the nurses cared for them. The NICU
experience allowed to me to see the doctors and nurses at their best in high stress environments
and I learned that the doctor's job was not only to care for the patient but to also counsel their

nervous family. Before my time in the NICU, I was considering specializing in Neonatology, as
I knew I wanted to work with young children. Dr. Khan and the nurses in the NICU, inspired
me to pursue my dream and proved to me the worth of a career as a Neonatologist.
- Children's Hospital of Michigan
Pediatric Neurology Clinic Shadowing
7/14/14, 7/21/14, 7/28/14, 8/11/14, 8/18/14 and 8/25/14 for a total of 24 hours.
Shadowed Dr. Lalitha Sivaswamy, Dr. Harry Chugani, and Ruth Roeder N.P. I observed many
cases including multiple patients with epilepsy and cognitive impairment, migraine headaches,
autism, and other neurological disorders. I was able to work with many resident doctors and
medical students and participated in an active learning environment. I found Dr. Sivaswamy to
be a great teacher, as she spent time going over each case in detail with her residents and
medical students. She asked them many interactive questions and made them discuss other
possible diagnoses. Many patients spoke foreign languages such as Spanish and Arabic and the
doctors had to work with translators to find out the patient's background. Often times the
patient's parents had not completed high school, so the doctors had to make an extra effort to
make sure they understood the diagnosis and treatment. My experience in this clinic was a true
eye opener in many ways.
Other Healthcare Experiences
- Beaumont Hospital, Troy
Saturday Series
Surgery on November 10, 2012 from 10-2pm
This course introduced me to the basics of surgical procedures and preparation. I worked with
nurses at many stations and learned important techniques such as gowning up and inserting a
breathing tube in infants and adults. This was my first hands on experience in a hospital and
taught me what it was like to work with medical professionals. Prior to this course, the only
healthcare experience I had was through my school's Medical Skills classes. After this course, I
was motivated to spend more time volunteering and working in hospitals.

I recorded all my community service hours through this school organization. Service supervisors
were asked to fill out forms in recognition of each service event and I turned in these forms to
my Service Learning adviser. Service Learning serves as a database for all my service work,
including the activities mentioned here among others.
Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries
8/31/14
One weekend, my family went to volunteer at the DRMM Soup Kitchen in Detroit. We cooked,
prepared, and served meals for the homeless and needy. After being thanked by the many
grateful families, I felt a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. I hope to go back and
volunteer my time again in the near future.
LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES
North Farmington High School (NFHS) French Club
Founder and President - 10th to 12th grade
In the 2012-2013 school year, I worked with my secretary and French teacher to plan weekly
meetings where we read French stories, watched French movies, and participated in other
French activities. We also planned the International Day fundraiser in May, where we set up a
crepe making station. In 2013-2014, under my leadership, we raised $450 for the Haiti
Educational Partnership. Our donation enabled seventeen children to attend the state primary
school in Paulette, Haiti. This taught me that a small act of kindness, requiring just a little
thought and compassion, can go such a long way and enrich the lives of those less fortunate.
This year we are raising money and collecting household articles to donate to Freedom House,
Detroit. We plan on delivering the items and visiting the residents soon.
NFHS Model United Nations
Parliamentarian - 11th grade
I taught new members how to debate and use Parliamentary Procedure in committee. I helped
plan and run the weekly meetings and led our delegation at the MSU conference. There, I
attended the Head Delegate meetings. I won three awards to present: two Honorable Mentions
and one Best Delegate Gavel. I also attended weekly SEMMUNA Planning Committee
meetings to plan the annual South East Michigan MUN Conference that was held at NFHS in
November 2014. My years and experience in Model U.N. taught me how to speak confidently
in front of strangers and to firmly defend my opinions.

Sanaya Irani

NFHS Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA)

Board Officer - 11th and 12th grade
As HOSA Board Officer, I worked closely with my advisers to prepare our club members for
annual regional and state competitions. During the State Conferences, I served as a voting
delegate and elected the future State officers. My time on HOSA board allowed me to spread
my love for the healthcare field to our club members. It also urged me to work harder at the
Regional and State competitions to set a positive example for fellow members.
NFHS National Honor Society (NHS)
Secretary -11th grade, President -12th grade
As Secretary, I took attendance and minutes during the meetings, set up the NHS board in the
hallway, organized events, and helped effectively run the club. When I was elected as
President, my responsibilities dramatically increased. I had to plan events and organize monthly
meetings for 200+ members. I worked closely with my adviser to organize the annual
Inductions Ceremony, plan large group events such as Raider Rake and the Goodfellow's
Canned Food Drive, and to keep track of our many members and help them meet their yearly
hours requirements. These responsibilities improved my communication skills both with peers
and adults and instilled in me a passion for volunteering and serving my community.
Farmington District Diversity Committee
Conference Facilitator -10th and 11th grade
During our monthly meetings, we discussed issues of diversity, such as stereotyping, impact of
religion on lifestyle, and influence of media on school life. These lessons helped me look at the
world with a more impartial perspective. As a District Diversity Facilitator, I attended monthly
meetings and planned the annual conference. During the 2013 and 2014 conferences, I facilitated
the dialogue in my session and helped group participants open up about their views on
controversial topics such as LGBT, impact of media on lifestyle, and the achievement gap.
Through this group, I also assisted in the selection of the new Superintendent during 2014.
Teen Advisory Board at the Farmington Community Library
Teen Adviser - 10th to 12th grade
Wrote book reviews for the teen blog and organized and planned upcoming library events. We
were a small group of 6 to 8 students, but the time we spent together made us closer with the
teen librarians and more active members of the library. I was able to positively give back to the
library, which was an important part of my childhood.
North Farmington High School Cabinet
Cabinet Member - 12th grade
This group consisted of student leaders from various large clubs at NFHS. As President of NHS,
I represented my club on the Cabinet which met to discuss ways to raise school spirit and solve
pressing issues at North. We worked on promoting our school's Homecoming Dance, games, and
fundraisers and discussed issues such as improper trash disposal throughout the school. This was
an enriching opportunity as I got the chance to work with fellow leaders and help beautify our
school and raise school spirit throughout the student body.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Zoroastrian Association of Chicago (ZAC) Youth Camp
July 2012, July 2013, July 2014
Assistant Camp Counselor at the ZAC Youth Camp - Summer 2013
Camp Counselor at the ZAC Youth Camp - 7/18/14 to 7/20/14
Spending this weekend at ZAC Camp every summer, allows me to meet other youth from my
faith. The camp takes place at the Fire Temple in Chicago. As camp member, I learned about
our religion and prayers from the Chicago priests. I quickly made new friends from across the
nation and as Counselor, I taught younger Zoroastrians to take pride in our faith. It is important
to motivate the younger generation to keep up with our faith, as our numbers have dropped to
roughly 120,000 worldwide. The camp motivates me to spread my love of my culture and
religion and spend time with other Zoroastrian teenagers.
Summer in the City
8/13/14, 8/14/14, and 8/15/14
Participated in Summer in the City, Detroit. Went to Pasteur Elementary School and mentored
young children in the daycare. I played outside with them, made crafts, and supervised them
during the Finale Party. During my time spent with the children, I learned how to work with
children from different racial and social backgrounds than mine. Although most of the students
were African American and I stood out amongst them, they didn't treat me any differently. I
discovered that skin color is meaningless in the eyes of young children, and that they consider
everyone their friend. On the last day, my buddies were crying and hugging me when we
said goodbye. I feel I was able to positively impact the lives of these young children by
creating fond memories that I hope will have a lasting impression.
Traveling
India
June - July 2012, June 2013
Every summer, I return to India to spend time with my grandparents and other relatives. India
is a completely different world from the U.S. Much of India's population is under the poverty
line and the level of hygiene in the towns and villages is extremely poor. Despite these below
average conditions, Indian doctors do their best to provide excellent medical care to their
patients. During my great grandmother's many weeks spent in the hospital, I watched doctors
work very hard to overcome the limited facilities and give their best to their patients. I also met
many new people during my summers in India and learned to read and write Gujarati. These
visits taught me to live without the comforts such as internet access, free flowing water, and
unlimited electricity and molded me into a more adaptable individual.

England
6/30/14 7/4/14
London, Windsor, Birmingham, Stratford Upon Avon, Burton on the Water, Oxford
After spending a few days with my cousins and family friends in London and Oxford, I came to
appreciate the different lifestyle of the English. Houses in England are much smaller than ours in
America and groceries are much more expensive. Yet the English always seem more content
and friend circles are much more closely knit. Friends meet together nearly every week for
outings. As I enjoy reading Shakespeare's plays, visiting his birthplace and tomb was an
enlightening experience. Conversations with my cousin, a second year medical student at King's
College, London, opened my eyes to the unique educational systems of U.K. I learned that in
England, many students get accepted to medical school straight out of high school. I also had the
unique opportunity of visiting the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London.
Paris, France
7/5/14 7/9/14
Ever since I began my study of the French language in the 7th grade, I have been fascinated
with French culture. Visiting Paris has always been one of my dreams. Thus my visit to the
City of Lights was a wonderful cultural experience. I was able to practice my French and visit
the many attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, Sacr-Coeur, and the Champs-lyses that I had
only read about in textbooks. I also visited the great museums such as the Louvre and Muse
d'Orsay where I was able to view works of art by history's greatest painters and sculptors.
Upon returning from my trip, I shared my many pictures and experiences with my French Club.
Organized and attended ZAOM cultural activities
As a member of the Zoroastrian Association of Michigan, I helped organize annual community
events. I usually arrived early to help set up the events and worked with student members to
put on a play or other forms of entertainment during the function. By working with other
members to organize these functions, I learned to develop my leadership skills within my
community and give back to a special group of people who are like my extended family.
Summer Reading Club at the Farmington Community Library
2012 - 2014
Read over 120 hours each summer as a part of the Summer Reading Club. I read various
novels including the Kite Runner, Shakespeare's Macbeth, Deception Point, among others. The
club encouraged me to continue reading despite my busy schedule and helped me meet with
other readers like myself. It also gave me an opportunity to give back to my library by
volunteering to help run the Children's Summer Reading program.
