CHALLENGES TO

SOVEREIGNTY

Regional Groupings and

delegation

GLOBALIZATION
The trend towards increasing global interdependence
due to the acceleration and intensification of
exchanges of goods and services.
Facilitated by widespread changes in communication and technology
Widespread impact on social, political, cultural and economic and
cultural life.

FREE TRADE: REMOVING

TARIFFS & SUBSIDIES
Freeing up the exchange of goods and services, technology and ideas.
We have gained access to new markets in China but it has also
exposed Australia to greater competition from Chinese manufacturers
and producers.

THE TRANSFER OF
SOVEREIGNTY UPWARDS
The European Union: (EU)
Common Single market
Customs Union
Single currency
Common agricultural , trade and fisheries policy
Where laws clash EU laws prevail.
Member states still retain control over foreign policy and defence
Post GFC creation of Fiscal Union allows EU to dictate national budgetary policies ( see
Greece handout)

CHALLENGES TO
SOVEREIGNTY

Contested and Changing

Borders.

RUSSIA AND THE REGION OF

CHECHNYA
Since the
dissolution of the
Soviet Union in
1991, there has
been conflict
between the
Russian
Government and
Chechen
separatists.

GEORGIA
In 2008 South Ossetia
unsuccessfully declared
and sought
independence from
Georgia.
The region has strong
cultural ties to Russia.

CONSEQUENCES FOR
GEORGIAN SOVEREIGNTY.
The idea that the Georgian State is in control of the territory within
its borders is challenged.
The support of Russian troops for the South Ossetians has the
capacity to compromise efforts by Georgia to re-assert its control
over this region.

UKRAINE/RUSSIA 2014
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-27308526
Ukranian sovereignty is compromised by its incapacity to control
some of its territory. Eg. Annexation of the Crimea / conflict with
Russian speaking separatists in Eastern Ukraine
The intention of the new Ukrainian Government to forge stronger
links with the EU faces obstacles in the form of Russian support for
pro-Russian Separatists

CHALLENGES TO
SOVEREIGNTY

THIRD AGENDA ISSUES

Terrorism, Global Warming, People Movement

Libya 2011
UN Security Council imposed sanctions to stem attacks on anti- Government Protestors
Obama Quote P14 loss of legitimacy

Syria 2012flow of refugees to neighbouring countries

human rights violations
chemical weapons
Assad Government viewed by many nations as having lost legitimacy.
