Lesson Plan Week Theme: Integrity

Grade Level: 10th, 11th, 12th


Subject: Language of Leadership
Objective: Students will be able to define what integrity means and
how the characteristic of integrity is used in a leadership setting.

How it Fits: This is the Monday lesson for the week on Integrity in my
Language of Leadership class. This is week 6 in the 18 week class.
Each week we focus on the a new characteristic of Leadership.
Standards: 21st Century Skills Iowa Core
Essential Concept:
1. Communicate and work productively with others, incorporating different
perspectives and cross-cultural understanding, to increase innovation and the
quality of work.
i. Effectively communicate with group and stakeholders
ii. Demonstrate respectful behavior to group member ideas and
opinions
iii. Manage and resolve conflict when appropriate
iv. Lead or support when appropriate
2. Demonstrate leadership skills, integrity, ethical behavior, and social
responsibility while collaborating to achieve common goals.

a. Students fill in definition Matthew, DeAndre,
Mackenzie
b. Provide definition
i. The quality of being honest and having strong moral
principles; moral uprightness

a. What does this quote mean to you?- Abbey, Sophia, Tanner
F. Ethical Dilemma
a. 5 parts to the ethical dilemma, we will go just one paragraph at a
time. DO NOT WORK AHEAD.
b. Story: Me
Story: In a 2012 state quarter final baseball game, a team was up 13-2. The coach of the winning team told

the star player to sit out the rest of the game. The player told the coach to blank off. The assistant coach
came by to help the situation and the player said the same thing to the assistant coach. Members of the team
came by to calm down their teammate. He said, F you guys too and proceeded to grab his phone and
tweet, F (his home team) Baseball. He walked out of the dugout and did not return.

d. Story: Mackenzie
Story: The coach decided to kick him off the team to teach an important lesson in respect and to let him
know that consequences are tied to every action. The father of the star player came by the school to talk the
coach into letting his son back on the team. He said, He made a mistake and he is really sorry

f. Story: Quinn
Story: The coach does not change his opinion so the father meets with the superintendent. He threatens to
sue the school if his son is not let back on the team.

h. Story: Matthew
Story: The superintendent tells the coach that he must let him back on the team. The coach follows this
directive. The star player plays in the semi-finals and state finals and his team wins the state championship.

j. Story: Sophia
Story: A group of coaches meet at the end of the year to determine the dream team that is made up of the
best players in the state. They all have heard about this story or witnessed it first-hand.

G. Students will then open their iTunes on their iPads (15 needed,
one for each student) They will go to the following podcast:

This podcast is from the George C. Marshall Foundation and the
Legacy of Leadership Podcasts. They will watch the 4 minute
video on #4 entitled Integrity.

H. Then as a class we will discuss what they saw and how that
relates to our lessons the rest of the week.
