Steps for instruction:
1. Introduction (2 minutes) - Discuss blocking behaviors with students. Let students know that our different
ideas allows us stretch each other, build one another, and think in different ways. Students begin the system of
home-court. We are a team and if I see that the team is being compromised I will say home-court. are also able
to say home-court to each other. This is not an excuse to cut people off. Need to be able to see each other as a
team for the next activity.
2. Introduction Activity (3 minutes) Working with partner to look at different books. What is different about
these books compared to The Outsiders? First team to get the answer receives dojo points. Why would the
author of The Outsiders not put titles on the chapters? What makes a good title of a book? Of a chapter? This is
what we will be doing today. Making chapter titles for the chapters using evidence from the book.
2. Instruction & Demonstration (5 minutes) Show example of student work: the title and the reasoning
behind it. Show my example of chapter one and my reasoning behind it. Ask the students, How are you going to
know what to write and what evidence to use? Ask the students, What is the purpose of a title and what is it
similar to?(Summary of a chapter in short form). What are the best titles? (The best titles dont give away all the
information of a chapter, but makes readers want to read more). What is the authors goal or purpose? (The
authors goal is to make you want to read the book and continue reading it). An example: The Outsiders. Is this a
good title, why or why not? Need evidence to support. If you think its a bad title, change it. If you think its great,
use this to spark your ideas for the chapter titles.
4. Employment & Practice (15 minutes) Students will work individually on making chapter titles for chapters
one to six by using evidence from the chapter. If students finish early they can rename the book and give a
sound reasoning for why they renamed the book. If they feel the book has a great title already they can give

sound reasoning for why they wouldnt change the title.
