Unit Title/Activity Focus: Ultimate Frisbee

Curriculum Model(s): TGFU

Analysis and Description of the Setting:


The school I am teaching at is Dutchtown High School in Acension Parish outside of
Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The school has around 2,200 students enrolled in the
school. The P.E. class will 45 minutes long, including 7 minutes at the beginning
and end of class for the students to change into appropriate apparel. The classes
will consist of 25-35 students, some classes are all 9 th Graders and other classes are
mixed 10th-12th Graders, half male and female.
Rationale: Why is this unit appropriate for the student population?
National Standards, Benchmarks, & GLEs:
Standard 1-The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety
of motor skills and movement patterns.
S1.H3.L1- Demonstrates competency in 1 or more specialized skills in health-related
fitness activities.

Standard 2-The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts,


principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
S2.H2.L1- Uses movement concepts and principles (e.g., force, motion, rotation) to
analyze and improve performance of self and/or others in a selected skill
S2.H2.L2- Describes the speed/accuracy trade-off in throwing and striking skills
S2.H3.L1- Creates a practice plan to improve performance for a self-selected skill.

Introduction & History of the Activity:
In 1968 Joel Silver introduced his idea of Ultimate Frisbee to the Columbia High
School student council in Maplewood New Jersey, USA. The next year, the first game
was played between two groups of students. They used a Wham-O Master disc. In
1969 a team had been formed at the school and they played in a parking lot. The
only lines that existed were the goal lines, usually marked by the telephone poles or
piles of the players' coats. The first college ultimate game was played between

Rutgers and Princeton on November 6, 1972. Rutgers won the game 29-27. The first
organized tournament, The National Collegiate Championships, was played on April
25th in 1975. Eight teams took part in a tournament in Yale. Rutgers University won
the final against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with 28-24. In 1976 the Yale
tournament was expanded and renamed into the National Ultimate Frisbee
Championship.
Formative Assessments for Each Learning Domain:
Students will be assessed by recalling the skill cues for any of the Frisbee throws or
catching a Frisbee when the teacher asks them during the skill practice activities of
the lessons.
Student will be asked to recall the skill cues for a backhand Frisbee throw:
-High-Level Response-Student recites and demonstrates all 5 cues without mistake
side-to-target, make an L and three fingers underneath, step to
target with dominant foot, flick and release, and point to target
-Mid-Level Response-Student recites and demonstrates 3 of the 5 cues
side-to-target, make an L and three fingers underneath, step to
target with dominant foot, flick and release, and point to target
-Low-Level Response-Student recites and demonstrates less than 3 of the 5 cues
side-to-target, make an L and three fingers underneath, step to
target with dominant foot, flick and release, and point to target
*Students with disabilities or injuries will be given another written assessment, only
if students have documentation from the school that says they cannot participate
Summative Assessments for Evaluation: Create a minimum of one
skill/performance assessment and one written/cognitive assessment. All
assessments should include an explanation of the assessment, how it will be used, a
copy of the assessment, and rubric/grading measures.
The skill/performance assessment will consist of a peer-assessment checklist. The
checklist will have all of the skill cues on it and an accuracy assessment. This
assessment will be administered during the unit before the formal competition
begins.

The written/cognitive assessment for the Ultimate Frisbee Unit will consist of
questions asking the students to recall skill cues for all Frisbee throws and questions
asking about the rules and regulations of ultimate Frisbee game-play. This test will
be administered at both the beginning and the end of the unit.

Ultimate Frisbee Bracket-style tournament. Students will be split into teams and we
will play three 9-minute games; Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and Championship.
Winners will receive Dutchtown Dollars.
