Generalist Nursing Practice

Organize the interdisciplinary health care needs of diverse populations across the
life span toward achieving the goal of healthy individuals, families, groups and
communities (Ferris State University School of Nursing, Portfolio guidelines and
Evaluation Process, 2013).
The generalist nursing practice outcome means that as a nurse not only do
you care for the individual patient, but the patients family that cares for them and
the community in which they live from birth until death in order to help the patient
and community achieve a healthy life. The nurse cares for patients from all walks of
life whether they are sick or well, rich or poor, young or old.
The Leadership Strategy Analysis was an analysis of blood sugar checks and
the time frame for dosing insulin based on the reported blood sugar. This took the
diabetic population at a hospital and changed the time frame for receiving the
insulin for that blood sugar. This assignment changed the care for the hospitalized
diabetic which led to nurses not only educating the patient, but the whole diabetic
community.
The Analysis of Geriatric Care Needs assignment was based on a case
scenario in which the patient was dying from cancer, the husband was unable to
grieve and the son knew something was wrong but was not allowed to be informed.
As the nurse in this scenario, you have four patients to care for, the patient, the
patients husband, the son and the family as a whole. The nurse has to coordinate
care for all of these people which requires her to reach out to other disciplines and
help all involved to a healthy place.
