Book Review: Seven Habits of Highly Effective

People by Stephen Covey
Dr. Covey challenges us to shift our paradigm to understand that different
perspectives do exist; we can see the same thing and yet differ with each other. Covey
relays the message that as leaders we should have abundance mindset that there are
enough resources and successes to share with others. In order to oversee a successful
school it takes everyone.
Covey introduces seven habits we must possess to be successful leaders. Those seven
habits are:
* Be Proactive We must have a can do attitude when it comes to our roles
and relationships in life.
* Begin With the End in Mind As leaders, within our mission statements we
have to envision what we want so, we know concretely what to make reality.
* Put First Things First As leaders we have to manage ourselves. We have to
put into place activities to reach habit two so we may create habit three.
These habits helps us to move from dependence to independence.
* Think Win Win Our feelings must be genuine for solutions/agreements in our
relationships. It is important we value and respect people by understanding

Effective People by Stephen Covey
a win resolution rather than one person has gotten his/her way.
*Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood This habit teaches
empathic listening. When we listen empathetically, then it compels to the
other person to reciprocate the listening and take an open mind to an
atmosphere of caring, and positive problem solving.
*Synergize As leaders we must learn to use the talents and strengths of
everyone through positive teamwork to achieve the goals no one person can
do alone.
* Sharpen the Saw We must balance and renew our energy, resources, and
our health to create a sustainable, long-term, effective lifestyle. As
educators we often let the hustle and bustle of our jobs consume us, but we
must learn to exercise for physical renewal, and mediate/pray and find time
to do some good reading for mental renewal.
Through our conscience, along with meaningful and consistent progress, we will
grow and see constant improvement. I have personally taken Coveys words to
heart and his Seven Habits are a part of my lifestyle.
