Sickle cell disease

A disorder that cause red blood cells to become misshapen

and break down. this also a chronic disease so it can last for
years or even lifetime.

Cause
Sickle cell is an autosomal
recessive gene.
This disorder is not a sex
linked gene.
sickle cell is Non disjunction

A healthy gene would

be the one that does
not cause the disorder
in the first place. But
the Afflicted gene that
is passed down could
be the reason to why
the new child has this
disorder. But if this was
to happen, both parents
need to pass down a
defective copy of the
gene.

Facts about the disease

SCD affects 90,000 to 100,000 Americans.
every year.
There is no data that shows that neither men or women will be
more frequently affected by SCD.
This disorder is most commonly seen in different ethnicities but
more in African Americans. African americans have a 1 out of500
people that will get sickle cell.
This disorder is most common in babies and toddlers.
68% ages 0-3. 39% ages 4-9. 24% ages 10-14

Symptoms/affect on the body

Some pain areas are the bones, or joints.
Pain types could be sudden in the chest.
Throughout the whole body you experience
dehydration, dizziness, fatigue, fever, low oxygen in
the body, or malaise
delayed development or delayed puberty
infection, inflamed fingers or toes, organ
dysfunction, pallor, shortness of breath, swelling,
vision disorder, yellow skin and eyes, or abnormal

Testing and screening

The best way to check for sickle cell trait or sickle
cell disease is to look at the blood using a method
called high-performance liquid chromatography
(HPLC). This test identifies which type of
hemoglobin is present. To confirm the results of
HPLC, a genetic test may be done.

Treatment
Sickle cell cannot be cured but treatment may help.
Treatments include medications, blood transfusion,
and sometimes but rare a bone-marrow transplant.
Prescription
Pain reliever: Morphine by mouth (Avinza) or by
injection (Duramorph)
Other treatments: Folic acid, Hydroxyurea (Hydrea)
Also common
Procedures: Exchange transfusion, Blood transfusion,
Patient-Controlled analgesia

sickle cell disease
