Essential Question

stories?
- What elements evoke the fear we experience
when we read/hear scary stories.

Students will know


- the meaning of figurative language
and that imagery enhances writing
(specifically in relation to horror)

- support their claims with text evidence

- state their opinions within a group

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence


Performance Tasks:
Students will participate in a
group discussion regarding
various aspects of scary stories.
Next, students will elect one
member of their group to share
what they discussed within their
group with the class.

Other Evidence:
Students will self-assess one
take-away from the lesson on
the feedback form.

Stage 3 Learning Plan


1. Figurative language review and learning plan for the day.
2. Students will get out a writing materials and open textbook.
3. Pose questions to consider before reading
- How are scary stories helpful or hurtful?
- How does figurative language enhance scary
4. Introduce the author
5. Students take turns reading text and record evidence to support their claims.
6. Students will get into groups and discuss the essential questions.
7. Each group will share their findings with the class.
8. Hand out feedback form

- Informal assessment will occur through observation of the groups and through
group discussion.
