Lesson Length: 90

Preparation

a Lesson Aim:
Students will review what they have learning about adding and subtracting
integers, modeling the addition and subtraction of integers, solving integer
word problems, and powers of ten. Students will be split up into six different
groups and visit different stations in which they will have practice drills in
these categories.
b Student Learning Objective:
In preparation for SOL 7.3a and 7.b students will model the addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers as well as add, subtract,
divide, and multiply integers. Students will focus on the addition and
subtraction of integers. In preparation of SOL 7.1a and b, students will
investigate and describe the concept of negative exponents for powers of
ten, and will determine scientific notation for numbers greater than zero.
c Introduction:
Students will be broken into their assigned groups that they will travel with
from station to station, and we will explain the procedures we expect
students to follow throughout their stations.
d Review:
Students will have to recall what they have learned about adding and
subtracting integers up to this point, as well as what they have learned about
modeling the addition and subtraction of integers. Students will also need to
recall what they have learned about powers of ten.
e Lesson Content:
Students will review what we have learned the addition and subtraction of
positive and negative integers, modeling integer operations, and powers of
ten.
f

Questions:

Students should be able to define integer. They should also be able to

answer what a zero pair is, and how these are formed. Students should be
able to explain how they can use the number line, as well as manipulatives,
to find their answers to both the addition and subtraction problems we will

practice in class. Students should be able to state the rules for adding and
subtracting integers. Finally, students should be able to explain scientific
notation and powers of ten.

II

Teach the Lesson

a Activities:
Students be broken up into assigned groups, with whom they will travel with
from station to station. At each stations, students will practice a different
type of skill: 1) adding integers 2) subtracting integers 3) adding and
subtracting integers 4) powers of ten 5) solving integer word problems and
6) identifying addition and subtraction integer models on a number line.
Students will also be given the option of solving more difficult problems in
each area if they are not challenging enough. At the first three stations,
students will be expected to do their work independently. At the second three
stations, students will have to work as a group to find the correct answers.
Each student in the group is responsible for being able to explain how their
group came up with their answers and why.
b Materials:
Students will need paper and something to write with.
c Check of Understanding:
Students participation in the stations, as well as how they do on their
individual activities throughout each station will determine student
understanding of each topic.

III

Lesson Closure

a Conclusion of Lesson:
We will go over what topics we covered in the stations, and talk about how
they felt about the activity (possibly as an exit slip time permitting).
b Reinforcement:
Students will be asked to come prepared to review for a quiz in the following
class period.

IV

Self-Evaluation of Lesson

My first group of students was not following directions at the beginning of the
class period, so they did not get to the group stations activity. Students
understood that their behavior was the reason they were not allowed to do
the planned activity for the class period. The second group did a great job
with the stations. They worked very well together, and were able to help one
another figure out difficult problems without coming to me for help.
