Unit Plan:

Influence

Amy Tuchschmidt

Class: Studio Art


Grade: 11-12, block scheduling, 130 minutes every other day.
Lesson 1: What influences you? Self-portrait that incorporates things that influence you and
make you who you are
What are the things that influence you?
o Family, Friends, Peers, religion, laws, school, history, social media, experiences,
society, celebrities
o How do these things influence you?
o Choice Based-Chose the influencing factor.
Day 1:
o Start class with a VTS image to get the students thinking and looking at art.
(Image 1 will be used on this day see attached.)

o Introduction to the Unit and the lessons within the unit:
Power point featuring the theme that will be following the three lessons.
Lesson one and two will be choice based as far as what medium they
would like to use. Lesson three will be technology based using Photoshop
to create our piece of art.
o Pose essential questions that we will attempt to answer within this lesson.
o Have student make their lists with in their artist journals. They can use words or
pictures to jot down their answers.
What are the things/people that influence you?
How do these things/people influence you?
o Have the students share their lists with the class in a group conversation where we
will make a class list from everyones answers.
o Have the students go through their list and pick the most important things on it.
o End the class with what we will be doing the next class: Next class we will be
working on compiling our thoughts on the things and people that are most
influential to us and start making decisions on how we want to convey those
thoughts.
o Each class in the last ten minutes the students will complete an exit slip style
writing in their artist journals about what they learned in class that day and what
they did or where they are at within their piece.
Day 2:
o We are going to Start the class by re-touching on the list we created in class one.
o We are then going to start working on our ideas for our art.
o I am going to explain to the class that this is going to be a choice based lesson.
They have the opportunity to use any medium that they would like to.

o We will use day two to test out various mediums so that we can make the decision
on what we will use. I will encourage students to break out of their normal
routines and try something new, and challenge themselves.
o Once we have decided what type of medium we are going to use we will use the
rest of the class to start mapping out what we want our piece to look like.
o Students will sketch out their plan in their artist journals before they start on the
final project.
o Exit slip journal post.
Day 3:
o We will finish up our planning session and start to map out our plan onto our final
piece. If they are drawing or painting I will have the students do a light sketch on
their piece to map out each part of their piece before they start to work in their
final medium.
o Mapping out what you are going to do is very important to making sure that your
final looks how you want it to. It helps you to make sure that everything is
balanced.
o We will then start to work with the medium of our choosing.

Day 4:
o Work day: Continue to work on our final

Day 6:

Day 7:
o Wrap up day. We will wrap up our final projects, and work on writing our short
artist statements about our pieces.
o Exit slip will be a self-evaluation on what we learned during this lesson not only
about the theme but about the mediums they used and any successes/ or problems
they encountered along the way.

Lesson 2: What/who do you influence? We are going to do a painting that will incorporate the
things that you have an influence on.

Lesson 3: What are different influences we see in society, historically or present day? We are
going to do a digital Magazine cover that we will create in Photoshop.

Day 2:
o Introduction of the new medium that we will be using.
o We will spend this entire class working on learning the basics of Photoshop, with
step by step instructions to learn how to manipulate, use the various tools.

Day 3:

o Play day: we will spend this day working in Photoshop and exploring how to use
different tools on our own.
o Exit slip journal entry.
Day 4:
o They will make their plan of action in their artist journal before they start on their
final piece.
o Begin the final piece.

Day 5:
o Work Day: continue to work on final piece.
o Exit slip journal entry.
Day 6:
o Wrap up day. We will wrap up our final projects, and work on writing our short
artist statements about our pieces.
o Exit slip will be a self-evaluation on what we learned during this lesson not only
about the theme but about the mediums they used and any successes/ or problems
they encountered along the way.
Day 7:
o Gallery day: we will spend the entire class looking at each others pieces which
will be displayed throughout the halls in a gallery like setting. Each of the three
pieces will be displayed together along with their artist statements.
o We will allow anyone that wants to talk about their pieces the opportunity to share
with the class.
o Exit slip will be a self-evaluation on what we learned during this lesson not only
about the theme but about the mediums they used and any successes/ or problems
they encountered along the way.

Assessment:
Artist journals will be stored in the classroom at night so that I will be able to look at their exit
slips and assess whether a student is learning and understanding the material. This will be the
form of formative assessment that I will use. At the end of each lesson I will grade the
assignment based on the attached rubric. At the end of the Unit there will be a summative
assessment that they will complete outside of the classroom which will comprise of a one page
portfolio. It will encompass everything they learned throughout the unit in a one page written
essay and a one page compilation of their work throughout the unit.
