STRENGTHS SCAN
Hannah Jenkins (childhood/high school friend):
1. What are my standout strengths?
You are independently minded but take direction fairly
well, almost like you simultaneously coexist as a leader and a
follower. Your greatest strength is not being reliant on others to
determine your self worth.
2. What are my moderate strengths?
Problem solving skills, your creativity and sympathy.
3. How would people describe me?
Confident but not cocky. Fashionable/well dressed. Intelligent but
has her moments, however, if and when this happens she is humble
enough that she can laugh at herself. Loving and a good friend.
4. What are my overdone strengths?
Spending/ making money. I by no means think you're materialistic
but I think money/making money will hold less and less value for
you overtime.
5. What are two skills I should strengthen?
Strengthen your fearlessness/ ability to be alone. I don't want you to
miss out on career opportunities because of job location etc. And
strengthen your conflict management skills. I can just see where
extremely strong conflict management skills would come in handy
in your career.
Brooke Hayes (family):
1. What are my standout strengths?

Doesnt like controversy- will need for hospital business to make
decisions that arent easy
Mary Lauren (friend):
1. What are my standout strengths?
In my opinion, one of your standout strengths would be
dedication. When you have a plan or goal in mind, you take every
initiative that you can to complete it and do it to the best of your
ability. Another standout strength would be that you are honest. It is
rare these days to find people who arent afraid to tell the truth. I
think that it is an important characteristic to have because it shows
that you can be trusted, which is another standout strength that you
possess.
2. What are my moderate strengths?
One of your moderate strengths would be that you are very
realistic. I think that in every situation, there is someone in the
group that is more realistic that the others. Being realistic is a great
quality to have because it shows that you can handle what you are
given, which is a positive characteristic that future employers will
admire.
3. How would people describe me?
People would describe you as an outgoing, people person. You
are someone who everyone wants to be friends with and you can
get along with anyone. When in crowds of people you know, or even
groups you dont know, you get along with everyone. People would
also describe you as a very determined and hard working person.
You are honorable in that you always keep your word and can
always be trusted. You are a great person, and when people look at
you they can immediately tell how great of a personality that you
have, which makes you such a wonderful, trustworthy friend and
future employee.
4. What are my overdone strengths?
While I honestly dont think that you have any strength
that could potentially hurt you in the future, one maybe could be
flexibility. I personally think that it is admirable and preferred to be
flexible, but you may have to put your foot down in the work place
in certain situations.
5. What are two skills I should strengthen?
When working at your future job, you may be required to
do a lot of paperwork, which can be tedious; therefore you may
need a lot of patience in order to work through all of it. Another skill
you may need for your future job is alertness and observant. You

Erin Hayes
may have to pay attention to close details for your clients in order
to properly assist them and their needs.
THEMES AMONG QUESTIONS
A common theme I found among the results to question one was
persistence/never giving up. This answer was found on question one
from four out of the five people. Communication and hard working
were another common theme among the strength results I received.
Stubbornness, patience and public speaking skills were a common
theme among my weaknesses results I received. Be able to view
common themes between each of the results from my strength scan
was very noteworthy. Common themes help me determine which
results I need to mainly focus on.

TALENTS INQUIRY
THINGS NATURALLY GOOD AT
Taking direction well Taking direction well is a natural strength
that I have done well since my elementary school days. I have
always had the drive to complete tasks that are assigned/given
to me. Through taking direction I always tend to become a
perfectionist, which can be a strength and weakness. When
given direction I like to follow them precisely and wont settle for
anything less.
Being creative/producing ideas Being creative/producing ideas
is probably my strongest natural strength. When doing projects,
anything from crafts and cooking to school projects, generating
new ideas has always come easy to me. This strength of mine is
most enjoyable to me and helps me from group projects to
everyday life skills.
Communication Communication is common strength I received
from the strengths scan. Communicating has always come
natural to me in my social life and work setting. While working in
cash and retail, communication is a common strength that Ive
been told I exceed at. It is easy for me to connect with people on
common interests and find things to talk about to form a
connection between us.
Confidence Confidence is a strength that I have always
entailed. Other peoples opinions about myself never get me
down and I can never gain a low self-esteem. Confidence is
important in work and non-work settings because it is important
to be happy with yourself and to have the ability to be confident
with the work that you perform.

Dedication Dedication is another strength that I was naturally

born with. When assigned a task or even set up a meeting with a
friend I am always loyal to achieve that task. I never give up on
something and will always push myself to perfect anything given
to me.
Athletic Athleticism is an enjoyable strength that I have and
was born naturally with. Playing sports is one of my favorite
hobbies to participate in. Throughout the year I participate in at
least four different intramural sports. Being committed to things
such as sports will help with future career skills because it allows
you to be timely, dedicated, team building and a healthy
lifestyle.

THINGS NOT NATURALLY GOOD AT

Public speaking skills Public speaking is something that doesnt
come naturally to me at all. When asked to stand in front of a
class or a large setting of people I automatically form anxiety
and nervousness. Public speaking, however, is something I try
to work on because I know it is much needed in my future
career.
Patience Patience is something I have lacked since I was young
and is hard for me to strengthen. While always being on a strict
schedule and having so much to do it is hard for me to be
patience and wait for things. Patience is something I try to
practice everyday, through calming and telling myself to slow
down and enjoy what youre doing right now.
Not being controlling In a lot of group settings that we have to
complete tasks it is hard for me to not take control and take in
other peoples opinions. Since I was young I have always had
the initiative to take control over a group assignment or task. I
try to practice good teamwork through; listening to other
peoples ideas and what they have to say about the assignment.
However, a moderation of control can be good when needing a
team leader and someone to take initiative to get the project
going.
Controversy Controversy is something that is always hard for
me to handle. Being someone that tries to avoid conflict, it is
hard for me to handle controversy. As a future healthcare leader
it is important for me to practice handling hard situations
because that is an everyday dilemma in the healthcare field.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

After receiving my strengths scan and reflecting on my talents
inquiry I had much overlap of strengths and weaknesses. The strength
scan was given to a childhood/high school friend, coworker, cousin, and

Erin Hayes
two friends. They each provided me a well thought out depiction of
myself. Each person provided standout strengths, moderate strengths,
a description, overdone strengths, and two skills I should strengthen.
Some standout strengths that were said, included: independently
minded, take direction well, not reliant on others to determine selfworth, creative, competitive leader, assertive, loyal, perseverance,
time management, confidence, persistence, dedication, and honesty.
A few of these standout strengths reminded me of times in my life that
I present these. Taking direction well is something that I have
presented since my elementary school years. For example, I can
remember completing assignments, such as my senior project,
following each instruction critically and being rewarded through a good
grade. Standout strengths help me as a leader to boost my self-esteem
and help drive me to keep being better. Through the strength scan
each person provided me some moderate strengths as well. A few of
these included: problem-solving skills, sympathy, communicating,
responsible, caring, and realistic. From these the most common theme
I received was communication. Communication has always come
naturally to me and is presented through myself everyday. For
example, through working in cash and retail I am forced to
communicate frequently and consistently on the job. Managers and
customers have told me about my excellence with communication and
how it can further my career. Knowing about your own talents is
important but I think the question about describing me was the most
interesting and beneficial. Together each person described me as
confident, fashionable, loving, good friend, funny, considerate,
trustworthy, hard working, approachable, passionate, outgoing and
honorable. A common theme among these was good friend and
hardworking. Throughout life I have always maintained some of my
best friends since elementary school. I believe that this makes me an
honorable and loyal person and will become beneficial in being a
successful leader. The last two questions of the strength scan were
used to help me improve as a leader. Each person listed some
overdone strengths of mine that could begin to hurt me as a leader
such as: spending/making money, stubborn, headstrong, controlling,
and flexibility. From a self-prospective I believe my most overdone
strength is stubbornness. While I think it is important to stay strong in
your own beliefs, it is easy to shut out others views as well. This could
potentially hurt me as a leader when participating in team building
with other coworkers. The last question that was answered in the
strengths scan was two skills that I could strengthen in myself. All
together this will help me begin focusing on me weaker strengths that
need an area for improvement. Some strengths that need
improvement include: fearlessness, conflict management skills, public
speaking skills, patience, working with others, keeping my emotions in
check, controversy, and alertness. From these answers the two most

Erin Hayes
common between everyone were public speaking skills and patience.
After having this shown to me it is easy to look back on many
situations where I have struggled with these strengths. There were/are
many times where public speaking begins to cause me anxiety and
nervousness. When standing in front of a large crowd getting ready to
present I begin to forget everything I prepared for resulting in me
relying on flash cards or a PowerPoint. Patience is another weaker
strength of mine that I struggle with everyday. From standing in line at
restaurants to driving in my car I always struggle with patience. This
strength scan was perfect in boosting my esteem as a leader and
through pointing out some weaker strengths that really need some
improvement. The talent inquiry was helpful in letting me reflect on
some natural/unnatural talents that I hold. Some things that I am
naturally good at are creativity, athleticism, and confidence. Playing
sports and crafting are two things that I enjoy doing in my spare time.
They are things that make me happy and can affect my mood for that
day. Having natural talents to participate in and be good at can affect
you as a future leader. Coming in as a happy person will make you
successful leader over someone who does not enjoy their spare time
and are not familiar with their natural talents. A few things that do not
come natural to me are similar to my weaker strengths that were given
in the strength scan. Controversy, controlling, public speaking skills
and patience were some unnatural talents of mine. These talents can
all be gradually improved but still are difficult for me to even focus on.
Through participating in the strength scan and talent inquiry I have
reviewed and analyzed my results to help further guide my leadership
model. I will use my standout strengths and moderate strengths given
in the strengths scan to help me maintain those strengths as a leader.
As a leader I will focus on continuing to take direction well, be loyal to
my team members, and be dedicated to my work projects. I will also
begin to practice my overdone strengths and my strengths that need
improvement to become a better leader. I can begin to practice my
public speaking skills through taking the initiative in group
assignments to take the larger speaking parts and practice my
patience through going to the longer line and calming myself to wait.
Through practicing these strengths it will help me become a better
leader in the long run. Overall, the description of myself presented in
the strengths scan lets me know altogether who I am as a person and
what strengths I can take from that to apply to being an effective
leader.
