Comprehending the Cultures of the World

Mrs. Gloria Luz Melgar Marquez

Final Reflection of the Course

At the start of every college course I take, I always look forward to learning with a
different teacher, who has their own unique technique at teaching, if applicable. During
my semester course Comprehending the Cultures of the World, I managed to discover
hidden truths about cultures I had been stereotyping my entire young adulthood. I was
not aware of the fact that this course would be a more in depth type of connection with
the world than with the actual English language. That in particular, made me enjoy the
course throughout this fall 2015 term.
I must include, I was actually really enticed to go help build peace between the
Arabs and Jews when we first saw the documentary, Promises. This course made me
realize that there are so many cultures one seems to put together as a whole. In the
documentary, there are Arabs and Jews living in the same area. Us as Mexicans, would
not ever come to think that they didnt get along. Every video, PowerPoint presentation
assigned, and reading assignments helped me stay interested.
Not only did the physical material shown during class help broaden my
perspective on worldly matters, but the way it was delivered to me was what helped me
acknowledge and absorb everything I was being taught. I felt that this class delivered
exactly what it was supposed to delivery: cultural knowledge. I believe that one can be
a better person by having somewhat of a clear notion of how easy it is to stereotype;
therefore, allowing room for self-improvement.
Additionally, I think that the teacher did a miraculous job teaching the class. I
think it is extremely crucial for students and teachers to cooperate and give feedback
during a class, especially this type of class. It is safe to say that no one can truly

understand what another person from another totally different culture is going through at
the moment, but its wise to learn as much as one can in order to avoid being ignorant.
Overall, I am satisfied with the general overtake of the course. There is not much
to argue when everything that was taught during class was hard, cold, and concrete
evidence about the world and its cultures. I would definitely consider taking another
course with the greatest English teacher, Mrs. Gloria Melgar.

Thank you teacher!
