Name:

Bridgewater College Teacher Education Program Elementary Lesson Plan

Date: Day 9 of Unit

Title of Lesson: Introduction to Atoms and Elements

Subject Area(s): Science - Matter

Grade Level(s): 5th

VA SOL: 5.4
The student will investigate and understand that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space; and
occurs as a solid, liquid, or gas. Key concepts include:
c. atoms and elements

Content Objective(s):
Learners will be able to...
1.

identify substances that are elements.

IEP Goal/Objective: some content objective.

Accommodations/
Differentiation
Assessment (based on objectives):
1.

Students will identify things that are elements as separate from mixtures.

A worksheet with just

the mixtures and
elements (no
compounds)

Alternative Plan:

Anticipatory Set (Hook & Agenda))
Today we are going to take a look at what actually makes up the matter that
we see all around us in solid, liquid, and gas forms.

Time
Planned
1 min

Access/Review Prior Knowledge

We talked about mixtures last week and are going to review them now. Use
the elements, compounds, and mixtures worksheet and have students put a
m in the blanks for what they think are mixtures. This will be used later
in the lesson to identify elements.

Give the student a

revised/shortened
version

Teaching Process & Modeling (Content is presented, accessed, or built):

5 min

1 min

Students will read, complete activities, and discuss the information.

Modeling
Students will follow along with the teacher through the SmartBoard lesson
taking turns reading the slides. After SmartBoard lesson, students will
work independently to complete worksheets.
Independent Practice
Students will read through the atoms worksheet and complete part A and B
by themselves. Part C will be used to guide a discussion about the location
of protons, electrons, and neutrons as well as their charges.
Students will read through the elements worksheet and complete part A on
the back by themselves. They will complete part C, correcting the false
statements. Part B will be used to facilitate discussion about some
important elements that are common like oxygen for breathing, copper for
pennies and gold and silver for jewelry.

10 min
have the student sit
close to the board to
focus concentration up
front
20 min
have student sit by
themselves to be able
to focus better instead
of talking
15 min

Checking for Understanding

Students will self-check worksheets with a different writing utensil.
Atoms Part A - hand out slips with the words and definitions to 10 different
students. Have them match up and have the rest of the class say whether
they agree or disagree. Part B - call on students. Part C - discussion.
Elements Part A - call on students. Part B - discussion. Part C - call on
students followed by discussion of false statements.
Use the elements, compounds, and mixtures worksheet and have students
put an e in the blanks that they think are next to an element. They can
change answers from the beginning of class.

Closure:

have student work

through the worksheet
sitting next to the
teacher

5 min

1 min

Today we learned about atoms and elements. Tomorrow we will go deeper

into the structure of atoms and the difference between elements.
Declarative Statement Summary:

1 min
