Section Four: Alignment to Curriculum & Professional Standards

Introduction
In this section I will display my ability to align curriculum and professional standards to
the artifacts in the portfolio, which are examples of daily work and responsibilities expected of
an elementary teacher. Curriculum standards and professional standards are important because
they serve as guides and are a way to enforce morals within teachers. These standards are
important to adhere to because they ensure that all educators are teaching the same curricula and
are meeting the needs of their students. They also guide teachers in practice by setting
expectations for students and teachers in the classroom. By being able to align the artifacts in my
portfolio to curriculum and professional standards, I am providing evidence of my pedagogy,
subject matter knowledge, ability to be a caring, effective, helpful teacher, and best teaching
practices. The alignment to the curriculum and professional standards chart provides an overview
of my knowledge and application of the standards, as they relate to my artifacts.

Curriculum & Professional Educational Standards

INTASC Standards.
The Interstate New Teacher Assessment Support Consortium (InTASC) Standards
are designed to prepare and support new teachers with professional development. The standards
are divided into four categories: the learner and learning (standards 1-3), content (standards 4-5),
instructional practice (standards 6-8), and professional responsibility (standards 9-10). They
provide guidelines for teachers regarding planning, content, instruction, assessment, and
professional responsibility. The standards help teachers create safe and supportive learning
environments for students. The following artifacts connect to the InTASC Standards:

Conclusion

MSED ELEMENTARY

144

Curriculum and standards are important because they serve as guidelines for teachers.
They ensure that there is consistency in subject matter being taught in classrooms across the state
as well as professionalism. This section identifies how my artifacts align to and adhere with the
curriculum and standards. In the next section I will reflect on my experiences writing this
portfolio and during my time at Medaille College in the Division of Education. This will display
my ability to reflect and my readiness in becoming a teacher.
