ABEL FLASH POINT APPARATUS

Aim
To determine the flash point and fire point of the given oil by using Abels
apparatus.

Apparatus Description
It is used for oils having flash points below 32.2 0C and which is also used for
oils having flash point between 32.20C to 490C.It consists of an oil cup
provide with a cover. Within the cup gauge B is provided to indicate the limit
to which the cup must be filled with oil. The cover consists of three ports for
the introduction of test flame and for observation. One port is at the center
and others near the rim of the cover. The ports of the cover can be opened
or closed by the sliding lid C which has two holes, one corresponding to the
central port in the cover and the other to one of the ports at the side. the
cover of the cup also carries a thermometer T from one side fitted at an
angle, and a stirrer S. the cup is mounted in the heating bath, which consists
of two co-axial, flat-bottomed cylindrical vessels D and E, the space between
them being used as a water jacket. The jacket is provided with a funnel and
over flow pipe and with a thermometer socket. The bath is heated by an
electric heater.
Procedure

The cup is filled with oil tube tested up to the mark.

The oil is heated by an electric heater by means of power supply.
The flash point is taken as the temperature at which the flash appears
on the surface of the oil.
The fire point is taken as the temperature when the oil vapors,
continuously burns for at least 5 sec on introduction of test flame.
Note the corresponding temperature in the thermometer for both flash
and fire point occurs.
Try the same procedure by using different oil over different type of
apparatus.
