Concept or Skill: singing on pitch, differentiating between singing and speaking

Grade Level: 1
Materials needed:
- Good King Leopold sheet music/Smartboard file
- Leaves sheet music/Smartboard file
- accompaniment for both songs, MP3 files
Objective(s):
1. Students will be able to sing songs on pitch and with rhythmic accuracy.
2. Students will be able to sing together and by themselves.
NYS National Arts Standard(s):
1. Creating, Performing, and Participating in the Arts.
National Standard(s) Music Education:
1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
Academic language used: repeat, echo, high, low
Procedure:
1. Play the recording of Leaves for the class, having them listen and move. As
the pitch descends, the students should move their arms and bodies down
towards the floor. As the pitch ascends, move arms and bodies upward to
standing position. During the musical interlude, have them pretend to be
leaves and move their arms gently through the wind.
2. Teach the song to the students by rote, line by line; sing a line for them, then
have them sing it back. Point to the visual aid to the beat of the song.
3. Once theyve sung through the whole song in parts, have them listen to the
track and sing along, continuing to do the motions.
4. Sing through the song again with the recording.
5. Sing through the song without the recording.
6. Introduce Good King Leopold to the class. Sing through the song for them.
Have them speak the class part in rhythm. Have them whisper it.
7. Break the song into parts and have them echo sing.

8. Once the class is able to sing through the song successfully and are
comfortable with it, the teacher will demonstrate being King Leopold and the
class will sing the class part. Explain to them that when the king finally
replies Yes! the class will stand up and run in place, and with a long arm
gesture, the class will sit down
9. Pick 3 volunteers to be King Leopold. Assign one to tell the class to whisper,
one to speak, and one to sing.
10.Run through the song; if it goes smoothly, the singing and the part where the
kids run in place, move on to 3 more volunteers.
