This artifact from a teacher portfolio demonstrates how sharing speeches are used to meet Iowa Teaching Standard 4 by engaging students in varied experiences that promote social, emotional, and academic growth. The teacher has students do five speeches throughout the year to improve speaking skills and give them independent activities to share. These speeches challenge students to make presentations with visuals, speak in full sentences at an understandable pace, and answer questions, helping students grow more comfortable presenting over the course of the year and developing social, emotional, and academic skills.

It is so important to engage students in a varied of experiences that promote social, emotional, and academic growth. We do Sharing Speeches throughout the school year to meet this standard. Students will participate in five speeches throughout the school year. The speech helps students to improve student speaking and gives them the opportunity to be responsible for an independent activity to share. Reflection on artifact (what went right, what went wrong, how to make better) These speeches are such a wonderful opportunity for students to participate in because it challenges them to begin working on their speaking skills at an early age. Students are challenged to execute a presentation with a visual, speak in complete sentences at an understandable pace, and be able to answer questions about their topic. Throughout the year the students improve and become comfortable presenting in front of an audience. This opportunity forces students to have growth in social, emotional, and academic development because of the requirements to the assessment. It is such a rewarding experience to witness the students grow in their speaking skills from the feedback, and take an active role in the learning by creating a creative presentation.
