Changes
ch. 7.3
I can label a change as physical or chemical
based on observational data.

What is a physical change?

examples

Chemical Properties
describes matter based on its ability to
change into new matter that has different
properties (chemical reaction)
wood burning - turns to ash and smoke
examples of chemical properties
flammability (non-)
reactivity - substances combining to form one or
more new substances (rust - metal reacting with
oxygen)

Comparing and using properties to

identify substances
Physical - you don't have to change the
substance to identify it - density, hardness,
color
Chemical - you can't always see chemical
properties (can tell flammability unless it is
burning), but chemical properties are always
there.
Characteristic properties - always the same
no matter what size substance is

Chemical Change (reaction)

when one or more substances are changed
into new substances and have new
properties
not the same as chemical properties
changes are a process, while properties describe
what happens
examples of changes soured milk
statue of liberty
jet propulsion on space shuttle
baking a cake

How do you know a chemical

change has occurred?
changes create new substances with new
properties
you might observe changes in
color
odor
heat
fizzing
foaming
sound
light
shape/size
