Your Name: Devyn Weber

Date of Activity: 10/3/15 & 10/23/15

Faculty Name: Darlene Lacroix

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):
With a total attendance at two different professional activities, the first professional activity that I
attended was the Mass Casualty Care Class. At this seminar hosted at the Tucson Fire Department, I was
listening to the presentation from the audience as there was a speaker giving the presentation. The class
discussed the potential occurrence of an armed shooter, the necessary response to a mass casualty with
multiple victims, and it discussed first-aid skills to have in addition to necessary supplies to carry. The
purpose of this class was to inform the public of the reality of potentially fatal accidents and violent acts
on others, and to educate the audience on the correct actions to take.
Supplementary to the Mass Casualty Care Class, I attended the Leadership Intensive workshop
that was hosted by the College of Nursing. This seminar was led by Mary Jo Kreitzer, PhD, RN, FAAN,
who is the founder and director of the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Kreitzer focused the discussion to the topic of taking the inevitable presence of chaos and being able
to manage it and shape it into a positive opportunity for change. This seminar included more opportunities
for discussion and collaboration amongst the audience, whereas the Mass Casualty Care Class was more
of a presentation and discussion following the conclusion.
Where was this held and what was the program/activity length?
The Mass Casualty Care Class was located at the Tucson Fire Department in downtown Tucson,
and it began at 0830 and lasted until 1230, for a total of a 4-hour duration. The College of Nursing
Leadership Intensive was hosted in the College of Nursing, room 117. The start time of the seminar began
at 1230 and continued on until 1700, for a total duration of 5.5 hours.
Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

The Mass Casualty Care Class will benefit me in the near future as I am pursuing a position in the
Trauma ICU in Phoenix, AZ. This class was beneficial for people of all education levels, and provided
great insight into the reality and inevitability of traumatic accidents and mass casualties. As a new nurse, I
will be held reliable for responding to the accidents and dangerous situations that I come across. Having
the information from the Mass Casualty Care Class will allow me to be adequately prepared and informed
on the proper reaction to the given situations, and it will additionally provide me with enough knowledge
to share with others.
On the other hand, my attendance to the College of Nursing Leadership Intensive provided me
preparation for my near entrance into the field of nursing. The transition into becoming a new graduate
nurse will be full of challenges and opportunities for development. With the information that I obtained
from Dr. Kreitzer and the collaborative opportunities with my peers, I will have an increase in my wealth
of knowledge when in situations of change and fluctuation. This Leadership Intensive was a beneficial
step to better preparing myself for various future leadership positions.
Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why or why
not? (Describe)
I would recommend both the Mass Casualty Care Class in addition to the College of Nursing
Leadership Intensive. The Mass Casualty Care Class was beneficial due to its accessibility to all ages and
education levels in addition to its informative content. I would also promote attendance to the College of
Nursing Leadership Intensive, as this seminar not only provides very useful information, but it promotes
collaboration with people of all educational and managerial positions.
