7th grade science

Standard:
Strand #2
Concept #2
PO 1. Describe how science is an ongoing process that changes in response to new information and discoveries.

Objective (Explicit):

SWBAT use the periodic table and apply the information gathered from the periodic table of the
elements to solve equations, and find appropriate chemicals and their possible pairs.

Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):

The students will display their element models around the classroom, using a gallery walk method, and verbally
answer questions about their element, or any around the room, with 80% accuracy. This includes; protons, neutrons,
electrons, number of shells, atomic mass, atomic number, valence shell.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):

SWBAT locate elements on the table, know the difference between period and group, explain what
charge an element has, label the parts of an element, and create a model of an element.

Key vocabulary:
Proton, neutron, electron, shell, valence shell, period, group,
charge, isotope, (+,-), atoms.

Materials/Technology Resources to be used:

Periodic table, phones/smart devices, smart periodic
table, PTE app, Power point, white boards, chosen
household materials.

Engage (Make content and learning relevant to real life and connect to student interest)

Explore

Everything in this room is made up of atoms, and everything in the world in fact. Today we are going to learn how to
use the periodic table of the elements to identify what things are made of and how they can react/work together to
change the world around us for the better.
Teacher Will:

Student Will:

Show students what the smart PTE looks like and

how to navigate it with their phones, or tablet
devices.

Listen to the instruction on how to use the smart

PTE, then they will get out their phones and tablets,
and begin to explore the smart PTE on their own,
choosing an element that interests them.

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation

Explain

We have 2 smart PTE boards on both sides of the classroom, so there can be about 15-20 students per
board, and both Mr. Nasser and I can guide students to what elements to pick, (harder or simpler based on
students comprehension of the subject). We are also going to display our own models to get the students
thinking about what their project can look like, and let them get creative.
Teacher Will:

Student Will:

Teacher Will: Present a PP with the vocab words.

White board to draw elements and compounds and
charges. Also will draw plum pudding models on the
board.

Take Cornell notes as well as begin to learn how to

draw a plum pudding model of an element. We will
use white boards and popsicle sticks of doom to
check for understanding.

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation

Elaborate

We will do a split teaching method, where I will be doing the vocab portion of the notes, and Mr. Nasser
will be doing the drawing portion of the lesson. We will switch sides way through the lesson, 15 min.
Teacher Will:

Student Will:

Bring the class back together and use white boards

to check to see what elements all the students have
chosen. If there are any blank white boards, those
students will then be assigned an element that I have
chosen for them. I will then ask for raised hands,
while asking questions on the parts of atom, and
what ideas some students got to make their elements
at home.

Use white boards to draw their plum pudding model

of their element, answer, verbally, questions about
the parts of an atom and what their ideas for their
model are. They will also use the knowledge they
obtained from the smart devices to show a better
knowledge of the PTE.

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation
Both teachers will walk around checking the progress at this point making sure no students go home
without a project.
Evaluate
Explain that I expect students to go home and begin to make these models, allowing them a whole 3 days to finish
them, while the rest of the lesson on PTE is being taught. Re-iterate how important this knowledge is to changing the
world to inspire some students to get a hold of this subject.
