Application 4
This chapter was pretty interesting to me. One classification of different areas of
development that caught my eye was the difference between intelligence and cognitive
development. Intelligence development is more on the material that an individual knows, and
cognitive development focuses more on how that individual processes and applies that
information (Windsor, Murrell, & Magun-Jackson, 2015, p. 45). The fact that an individuals
mental capacity is defined not only by the things they know or the length to which they know
them but also by their process of thinking and depth of understanding makes me think differently
about the cognitive domain of an individuals development and how society refers to it. For
example, if one calls someone smart, does that mean that they know a lot or that they have the
capacity and capability to learn and understand complex topics and concepts?
