Pre-assessment: (What will I use for pre-assessment, and how will I use the
results of the pre-assessment?)
Students will compare and contrast two characters from two different stories
they have previously read. They will write down the similarities and
differences of the two characters.
Standard(s): (Include specific state standards.)
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.6.9 - Compare and contrast texts in different forms or
genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in
terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.6.6 - Use technology, including the Internet, to produce
and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others;
demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of
three pages in a single sitting.
Objectives: (What should students be able to do at the end of the lesson?)

Students will be able to compare and contrast "The Breadwinner" to "Mulan"

in terms of their approaches to individual development and cultural identity.
Students will be able to construct a graphic organizer on the computer to
organize and produce their writing while collaborating with others.

Anticipatory Set, Hook or Engaging the Learner: (How will I gain

students attention?)
To gain students attention, I will show a scene from the movie Mulan and
ask the students to focus on Mulans actions and take notes.
Instruction: (How will I present new material and make learning relevant?
Bullet the order and content you plan to teach in the lesson. Include
proposed questions and anticipated responses from students.)
By this lesson, students will have finished reading The Breadwinner. To
begin, I will go over compare (the ways two or more items are similar) and
contrast (the way two or more items are different).
After covering compare and contrast, students are going to watch a scene
from the movie Mulan: http://youtu.be/K08_gS2shfk
After watching the brief scene, students will write ways that Mulans
transformation is similar to Parvanas experience. They will do this
independently.
Once students have written a few ways that Mulan and Parvana are similar,
they will write ways that Mulan and Parvana are different. They will also do
this independently.
Once the students have written ways that Mulan and Parvana are similar and
different, they will share their similarities and differences with a partner.
Proposed question: Why did you say Parvana and Mulan are similar?
Anticipated response: Because they both pretend to be boys or I put
because they both could not do what the boys could.
Proposed question: Why did you say Parvana and Mulan are different?
Anticipated response: Because Parvana was basically forced by her family
to pretend to be a boy and Mulan made the choice herself.
Once students have brainstormed at least two reasons for similarities and
two reasons for differences, they are ready to begin drafting their writing.
Before students begin drafting their writing, I will model a compare and
contrast essay. I will compare and contrast two characters in stories we
would have previously read.
I will write an introduction which will introduce the topic: compare and
contrast of

and
(two characters from previous stories).

I will then write a paragraph that states the way the two characters are
similar. I will support the similarities with evidence from both texts.
Then, I will write an example paragraph about the ways the two characters
from previous stories are different and use evidence from both texts to
support the differences.
I will provide chart paper with transition phrases and sentence starters for
the students to refer to throughout their writing..
To begin drafting their writing, students will need access to Chromebooks.
Students will go to www.readwritethink.org and type Compare and Contrast
in the search bar.
Students will use the interactive graphic organizer to develop their writing.
Once students are done filling out the graphic organizer, they will print it and
begin writing their compare and contrast essay.
Guided and Independent Practice: (How will I get students to
practice/apply what has just been taught?)
Students will write the similarities and differences in their culture compared
to the culture of Parvana, Mulan, and/or another text regarding the theme of
identity.
Students will apply their knowledge of compare/contrast on future lessons.
Closure: (How can I bring closure to summarize learning and enhance
retention of the material?)
For closure, students will engage in pair/share in which they will share 2-3
things they learned from the lesson with each other.
Alternate Plan B: (What will I do if students do not understand the
material? What will I do if technology doesnt work?)

If students do not understand the material, I will allow them to work

cooperatively to determine the similarities and differences of Mulan
and Parvana rather than work independently. I will also write the
information on a sheet and use the projector so each student can see
what to write.

Post-Assessment: (What data will give me information about students

understanding of the lesson, and how will this assessment be used?)
For post-assessment, students will turn in the graphic organizer and their
compare/contrast essay.

Accommodations: __ Extended Time Preferential Seating __ Segmented

Assignments __ Assignment Length Communication Methods
Peer
Tutors Instructional Assistance __ Other
ELL students will be seated together and will receive additional instructional
assistance with the assignment. The assignment length will be altered,
where they may only write about one similarity and one difference. The
struggling reader will also receive additional instructional assistance and a
shorter assignment length.
Remediation
Students will watch the clip of Mulan several times. They will write down
similarities and differences of Mulan to Parvana. From there, students will
look in the text to find supporting details, as well as refer to the movie scene
to find supporting details.
Enrichment
Students will compare and contrast Mulan, Parvana, and a fictional character
they are reading about in another text.
