Perspectives of Leadership
Pre-Interview
For my leadership profile I decided to interview a lawyer named Gregory Hadley. This is
my friends father who has been running his own law firm for years. I have met him once or
twice for a moment but we dont know each other personally. I decided to interview a lawyer
because I have been interested in becoming a lawyer for my career, since I was about 15 years
old. I am not sure that it is the career I want to pursue but it is an intriguing field of work. I
would like to learn more about how he specifically handles cases, customers, and working with
other lawyers.

Research
Lawyers have a heavy workload and a high pressure job, but it can be very rewarding.
Law practice is so diverse that it is not possible to describe the so-called typical lawyer. Each
lawyer works with different clients and different legal problems. However, certain basic legal
skills are required of all lawyers, (Being a Lawyer). A lawyer must know how to find the
common grounds in a large array of diverse documents, advocate for groups and individuals, and
be able to express others views within the context of the legal system. They must also know
provide intelligent counsel on the laws requirements, write and speak understandably, analyze
legal issues, and negotiate effectively.
There are two kinds of lawyers. They are either a specialist and general practitioner.
Specialists handle specific kinds of cases, such as divorce, child abuse, etc. General practitioners

pick up whatever kinds of legal cases come their way. Although there are different kinds of
lawyers, all lawyers should meet the same requirements to perform well. Good judgment is the
most important attribute for a law firm or corporate legal department leader to possess.
Collaboration skills is ranked second. High ethical standards, then tact and diplomacy follow
shortly after, (Hamilton, L). It is more important now than ever for lawyers to understand the
law and treat each customer well during each case.

Interview Summary
During my interview with Gregory Hadley, a general practitioner, I received the
impression that this man is striving to be as good as he can. He has high morals, high
expectations, and high standards. He tries to be honest in all of his doings, patient with people
even when they are being difficult, and he tries to lead others with kindness. His family is the
accomplishment he is most proud of.

Greg Hadley was inspired to become a lawyer when he watched an old movie titled
Inherit the Wind from 1925. The movie included lots of interesting court scenes and he was
intrigued by them. Hadley has been a practicing lawyer since 1981, thats 34 years. He has
enjoyed this career because he likes dealing with peoples problems and helping them solve their
issues. He believe ethics include, working hard throughout your whole shift and being diligent
the whole time.

BUS 101 SECTION 6

Most of the business his firm encounters is not from any major advertising methods, but
from the word of mouth. If he does his best work in each cases, there is always a good return
when the friends and family of former customers comes in. This strategy has been working for
him for years now. He was very unfamiliar with any internet networking or social media
methods. Hadley said that they have a website and probably a Facebook page but he has
someone who takes care of those type of things for him.

When Hadley encounters a problem, he likes to get right down to the source and not beat
around the edge. The biggest mistake that a leader can make is to not learn from previous
mistakes. One of his personal biggest regrets was not studying more in high school. Hes been
out of high school for almost half a century and still considers that one of his biggest regrets. It is
important for us to use self reflection, like the book From Values to Action explains. We need
it in our lives so we can keep progressing, growing, improving, and developing as a person.

When dealing with his employees he considers his expectations reasonable. When he is
reviewing each team members ability, work and ethic his methods are very casual. He just pays
attention over time if they complete what he asks them to and are doing their best work each
time. He likes a positive attitude, and a hardworking person. When he has to choose between to
equal candidates, he said he would choose the individual that he feels he could get along with
easier. For obvious reasoning, but it would make the work place more comfortable. He says the

BUS 101 SECTION 6

best way to help a new employee understand the culture of his organization is to talk to them. If
he gets to know them and shows them around they will become more familiar with it.

The most important aspect of business is morals. He said, Its the basics weve learned
since primary. He specifically included The Thirteenth Article of Faith which says: We believe
in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may
say that we follow the admonition of PaulWe believe all things, we hope all things, we have
endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous,
lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. He also referenced The
Scout Law, which states: A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind,
Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. These are mottos that he learned to
live by. Hadley stated in a joking way that if he ever felt everything is too board line legal, that
he wouldnt participate in it. He knows he has a responsibility to the environment, society, and
his community.
