Introduction
Language teaching methods is very important teaching strategy
and helpful for teacher and students. It's a biased strategy to use in
the classroom instruction, and that strategy focuses on children's
skills to develop their learning language, especially the second
language (English) (Teaching Methods, 2015). Choice the language
method of many languages teaching methods, those depend on
what appropriate both of teacher and students (Teaching Methods,
2015). In this essay, I will talk one of language teaching method
which is TPR method and explain it in clearly with critical analysis.
The TPR method known as Total Physical Response and was
developed by Dr. James J Asher in 1977 (Frost, 2004). Total Physical
Response is a language teaching method depends on physical or
motor skills to develop children's learning language in a fun way. It
makes building the coordination of speech and action between
teacher's instructions or parent and children (Total Physical
Response).

TPR method
The TPR works in the classroom between teacher and students.
In this method teacher's main role is that of giving commands to
instruction and students have responded these by playing an active
and participatory role in TPR class time. For example, the teacher
says to students sit down and stand up as a phrase or an instruction
and they have demonstrates these action. During teacher repeats
the phrases, children will respond these in physical and will follow
these instructions with understanding the means with right action.
These ways are as listen and do the activity so, and students will
feeling confidence, fun, motivate and encourage to doing in actively.
TPR method is more effective and enhanced the physical
movement in children also will develop their learning target
language (Bowen). Using it in the classroom will help students to

remember phrases or words (memorable) (Segal Cook, 2001-2015).
The TPR can listen, watch and do or listen and do as activities.

Teachers and students roles

Both teachers and students have different roles to do in this
method. The teacher needs to teach students and given them all
things they have to take as a lesson in more interesting. That is
children will motivate to learn English through TPR method, the
teacher should decide before of what want to teach then give them
oral commends in clearly, easy, models with students in first time
and that have related to the previous lesson.
3

Also, a teacher has selects the materials (props, realia, pictures) to

use these in TPR activity and directs the instruction to children to
doing an active in the classroom (Total Physical Response).
The student's roles are a good listener and perform the action
and respond the teacher's commands by active physically. A teacher
has encouraged them to speak when they feel confident and ready
to speak (Total Physical Response).Students will learn key words
from lessons or stories through TPR, understanding sentences
(phrases or instructions), listening to instruction in carefully and
imitating the teacher's instruction by actions through listening to the
teacher.

Errors
Many mistakes can children fall in during TPR activities, that
sometimes teacher do TPR activity without the focus on their doing
and some of them do the instructions in wrong way, or they will do
all the time in silent. Also, the teacher can see that is not works for
high level's children because that is easy and very poor learns for
them. However, some of them have mistaken in vocabulary words
with doing in wrong directions or active.

Skills and areas of TPR

TPR method in not only depends on children's listening and doing, but
it also develops many skills that help children to acquire and improve their
learning second language. There are speaking, reading and writing can
children doing through TPR activities (Segal Cook, 2001-2015). For

example, they can create own stories with using their imagining by writing
also can reading stories then speaking of what they are understanding
with using new vocabulary (Segal Cook, 2001-2015).

Techniques and activities of TPR

TPR activities are more and different areas to develop many skills
in learning the language. In last my TP, I observe that my MST used
many different TPR activities with children in her classroom. For
example, she used TPR activity as warm up that is classroom
commands exercise when she given them oral commands students
has done action of the word. The teacher said to them "stand up,
hands up , hands down, clap your hands, turn around, stamp your
feet, stretch out your arms and sit down" they were active physically
of the phrase in one by one. That's way makes them feel active and
ready to start the class. Another activity has other objectives I used
in the last my TP, which is TPR song activity "If you're happy song". I
used two TPR activities before and after the story time. First of all, I
played this song as video as warm up before telling the story that is
"The Way I Feel" to motivate them to be happy and ready to listen to
the story in attention.
4
Second, during read this story student has active each feeling
express happen. For example, when teacher say" show me your
happy face, sad face, exited face etc."
Other activities have related to the TPR method like listen and
do, action rhymes, using puppets in story time. For instance of listen
and do activity, in my body lesson, after teacher gives them the
lesson and want to check of their understanding the body parts she
has to work TPR activity with them. In circle time, students will
stand up in circle and teacher will give oral commands and they
have to listen and do it by action physically like "Catch your hair,
Touch your eyes, Touch your ears, knees, feet, etc."

Benefits and limitations of the TPR method

There are many benefits of this method: (Frost, 2004)

Instant understanding of the target language.

To learn new vocabulary
Feeling fun with building confidence to ready speak
Enhance to giving commands to each other

Express their feeling in freedom.

Introduce sentences gradually and one after one by keeping to
order sentences.

Limitations of this method:

Teacher decide what to they do, subsequently students can't

do what they want.
Using a lot of this method it would become repetitive and
feeling boring for children and it will reflect negatively on
children's learning.
It's suitable for beginner levels.

Conclusion
In summaries, language teaching methods are the basis of ways
that teacher can choices and applied to her teaching and have
creative own teaching style. TPR method is a good way to teach
English for Emirate's students as a second their language, and that's
helpful them to learning and acquiring language, in my opinion.
Using TPR method in the UAE school setting will provide children to
build background knowledge and vocabulary acquisition with
provide an exemplary role model for good listening (Claudia
Eliason , Loa Jenkins, 2008) and given support to speak in
scaffolding language growth in children.
5

In comparing between TPR and others methods, I think that's a good

teaching in the classroom with using many different methods to
improve children's learning language. For example, if teacher use
CLT method in her class that will support TPR method to
communicate children and feeling confident and free to speak and
discussion like role-play activities and playing games. TPR activities
can be a successful and fun way of changing the dynamics with
using other methods and pace of a lesson used in conjunction with
other methods and techniques (Frost, 2004).
