Competency 001

Knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the development,


articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is
shared and supported by the school community.
How was this competency addressed?

The competency was addressed when I attended meetings that


included information from board meetings and the superintendent.
Discussions included salaries, taxes, employee benefits, district-wide
programs, or campus updates.

The competency was also addressed when I began to research


local agencies for our campus-wide project to collect items. Our
school was able to build a community relationship and collaborate
effectively with the Star of Hope.

What did I learn from this
competency?

I learned that the district


cannot run effectively without
the voice of the staff, board
members, and the community
at large.

I also learned the importance


establishing relationships with
the community and
collaborating together.

How will I continue learning


about this competency?

I plan to continue attending


meetings and be part of the
committees that are involved
with community relations.

Competency 002

Knows how to communicate and collaborate with all members of the


school community, respond to diverse interests and needs, and mobilize
resources to promote student success.
How was this competency addressed?

This competency was addressed when I met with the counselor to


discuss ideas on collaborating with the Star of Hope.

We discussed ways the school could effectively communicate and


educate family members on the needs of the homeless.

This was an opportunity to engage students on the topic of


homelessness and being aware of social issues.

What did I learn from this
competency?

I learned this competency can


have an effect on the
community, along with the
faculty and student.
I learned this is my favorite
competency because I enjoy
working with campus
stakeholders, community
relations, and responding to
political and social issues.

How will I continue learning


about this competency?

This is an area I plan to grow in


professionally.

I plan to continue developing


relationships with local
agencies and community
members.

Competency 003

Knows how to act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical and legal
manner.

How was this competency addressed?

This competency was addressed when I attended a meeting with


my mentor and professor.

My mentor promoted the awareness of learning differences and


served as an advocate for all students. My mentor helped me apply
these skills when I was setting up projects.

What did I learn from this
competency?

I learned this competency is


very important when meeting
with faculty or parents.

This competency requires


knowing the policies, being
culturally diverse, and
protecting the rights of
students.

How will I continue learning


about this competency?

I will plan to attend more


meetings, learn more about
policies and procedures, and
be aware of ethical issues
effecting education.

Competency 004

Knows how to facilitate the design and implementation of curricula and


strategic plans that enhance teaching and learning; ensure alignment of
curriculum, instruction, resources, and assessment; and promote the use of
varied assessments to measure student performance.
How was this competency addressed?

The competency was addressed when I participated in the


development of the curriculum for the Writing Lab.

I also met the competency when I would met the paraprofessional


and reading specialist to discuss the curriculum. We wanted to
ensure students were being successful and meeting the goals of the
program.

What did I learn from this
competency?

I learned that it is very


important to implement
research-based programs
effectively.

I also learned it is important to


use student data for curriculum
planning, student learning, and
educational accountability.

How will I continue learning


about this competency?

I plan to attend more training


on promoting creative thinking,
campus collaboration, and
research-based practices.

Competency 005

Knows how to advocate, nurture, and sustain an instructional program and


a campus culture that are conducive to student learning and professional
growth.
How was this competency addressed?

The competency was addressed when I met the paraprofessional


and reading specialist for the Writing Lab. Each grade level has its
own writing curriculum and I had to ensure the lessons were aligned
to the TEKS and campus goals.

The competency was also addressed because the students needs


were being met and their writing skills were improving. The Writing
Lab gave all students multiple opportunities to learn and be
successful.

competency?

I learned this competency is


important because a principal
must be able to facilitate the
development of campus
programs that support
instructional improvement.
I also learned that it is
important to allocate resources
for campus programs.

How will I continue learning


about this competency?

I plan to continue learning


about relevant research, best
practices, and techniques of
teaching.

I also plan to learn how to


analyze instructional needs
and allocate resources
effectively and equitability.

Competency 006

Knows how to implement a staff evaluation and development system to


improve the performance of all staff members, select and implement
appropriate models for supervision and staff development, and apply the
legal requirements for personnel management.
How was this competency addressed?

The competency was addressed when I met with my mentor to


discuss my internship projects.

The competency was also addressed when I attended the


Leadership Academy, which consisted of classes for those aspiring
to be principals with the district.

Competency 006
What did I learn from this
competency?

I learned that working with the


other campus personnel can
be challenging but a principal
must work collaboratively to
address staff needs and
campus goals.
I also learned that morale is
crucial for ongoing campus
improvement.

How will I continue learning


about this competency?

I plan to learn more about


effective recruiting, screening,
and evaluating campus staff.

I also plan to do more research


on campus funding and other
resources for implementing
professional development.

Competency 007

Knows how to apply organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving


skills to ensure an effective learning environment.
How was this competency addressed?

This competency was addressed when I met with my mentor to


discuss my projects for my internships. My mentor gave me ideas for
decision-making and problem-solving.

She also encouraged me and helped me make the necessary


adjustments to achieve my goals.

I learned it is important to
implement appropriate
management skills to meet
campus goals.

I plan to develop skills for


monitoring and evaluating
change to meet campus
goals.

It is also very important to


ensure procedures for
gathering and analyzing data
to make campus decisions.

I also plan to learn how to


apply these skills using
collaborative strategies.

Competency 008

Knows how to apply principles of effective leadership and management in


relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial
management, and technology use.
How was this competency addressed?

This competency was addressed when I would attend the faculty


meetings and plan with my team members and colleagues.

This competency was also addressed when we had campus-wide


PLC meetings, STAAR meetings, and before or after school
committee meetings.

Competency 008
What did I learn from this
competency?

I learned that time


management and effective
planning must work together to
achieve district and campus
goals.
I also learned that technology
enhances school
management and
collaboration.

How will I continue learning


about this competency?

I plan to learn more about


budget planning and
management.

I also plan to become more


knowledgeable on acquiring
financial resources and
working collaboratively with
stakeholders.

Competency 009

Knows how to apply principles of leadership and management to the


campus physical plan and support systems to ensure a safe and effective
learning environment.
How was this competency addressed?

This competency was addressed when I had morning and late duty.
Procedures were in place for before and after school and I had to
make sure the environment safe for the students.

Strategies were used to address emergencies, security concerns,


especially with transportation.

Competency 009
What did I learn from this
competency?

I learned all schools must have


procedures in place for
emergencies and responding
to crises.
It is also important to apply
local, state, and federal laws
for school programs and
operations.

How will I continue learning


about this competency?

I will continue to learn about


how to implement strategies
for school safety and security.

I also plan to learn more about


school policies and
procedures.

What have I
learned

internships?

A principal must be able to collaborate


and communicate effectively and
appropriately with school personnel and
the community.

A principal must be able to facilitate,


design, and implement strategies to
enhance teaching and learning.

A principal has to apply effective


leadership skills, decision-making, and
financial management in a fair and
ethical manner.

A principal must be able to address


safety and security concerns.
