Jenny DeNooyer

Date: 11/17

Subject/ Topic/ Theme: Heat Energy Heat

I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
The main focus of this lesson is to show students the many ways they use heat in their day to day lives
and where that heat comes from.
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan? (If applicable.)
Lesson 2/5 in the heat energy unit plan.
What are your objectives for this lesson? (As many as needed.) Indicate connections to
applicable national or state standards. If an objective applies to only certain students write the
name(s) of the student(s) to whom it applies.
-Students will be able to list at least 2 heat sources they use in their day to day lives.
-SWBAT determine if a heat source is natural or human made.
-Students will be introduced to the names of the six heat sources: sun, friction, chemical, nuclear, earth,
and electric.
-Students will understand and restate that all living things require heat, in some form, to survive.

II. Before you start

The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher
activities and student activities
Today we are going to work to answer our first big question where does heat
come from?
-Read heat energy book for intro

Class discussion:
-All living things need heat
A. Plants, animals, people
i. Do living things live where it is always cold?
ii. Pictures
B. Heat is used in our homes
i. Warms us
ii. Cooks food, hot water, dries laundry, makes electric light bulbs
give off light
C. Heat us used in industry
i. Melts metals, cuts shapes and hardens metals
ii. Heat is used to process food, glass, paper, fabric
D. Heat from burning fuel gives engines power for airplanes, cars,
rockets and ships.
- 6 sources of heat:
A. Sun, friction, chemical reaction, the earth, nuclear energy, electricity
B. Natural heat sources: the sun, the earth (volcanoes)
C Heat sources in our homes: candle, lights, stove, oven, fireplace, how
water heater, dryers, hair dryers, microwaves, toaster
Students help create list of heat sources
i. What creates heat at home? What warms you up?
ii. Is it a natural source of heat? Or does it come from something man-made?
Fill out heat energy sheet together, write words, on the back students will draw a
picture of a natural heat source and a human-made resource.

Closure

-Fill out science folder web/flowchart with things we have learned today. Allow
students to share a sentence of what they learned, then shorten it to fit in the
bubbles. Stem off the bubbles as needed
Some examples:
-All living things need heat
-We use heat everyday homes, cook food, heat water, candles, ovens
-Heat is used in industry melt metal, cuts, shapes, hardens
etc.
Explain heat source worksheet that will be in seatwork the next day.
We now know a lot of the different ways we use heat in our day to day lives. There
are a lot of heat sources we encounter daily. Tomorrow we will learn about how heat
moves from those sources!
