Therapists and counsellors, through training and supervision, are imbued with

particular values and beliefs and operate within a strong code of conduct. In other
words, they develop a counselling culture, a part of which is the sense of contract
between counsellor and client. This formalized relationship and the obligations of
each may have little meaning for many non-western asylum-seeking and refugee
clients. Perhaps of more importance is their attachment to someone who can be
trusted and will give some help, whatever form this takes.
